‘Captain Cool’ Parvez Rasool guided Jammu & Kashmir to a surprise six-wicket win over Saurashtra in a Group D league match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day cricket tournament at Gymkhana Ground here on Thursday.

Chasing a target of 268, J&K was off to an impressive start thanks to the flamboyance of opener Ahmad Omar (65, 66b, 11 x 4, 1 x 6) and Jatin Wadhwan (30, 49b, 1 x 4, 2 x 6) who put on 96 in 17.3 overs before Jatin departed holing out to the deep.

Saurashtra came back strongly into the game with offie Kamlesh Makwana sending back both the openers in quick succession to leave at J&K to 99 for two in 19.5 overs.

Then, the gritty Shubham Singh (55, 47b, 7 x 4) joined Rasool (67 not out, 80b, 3 x 4, 2 x 6) to put on 98 runs for the fourth wicket which effectively dashed Saurashtra hopes off pulling off a victory. Though Shubham departed with 24 runs to go, Rasool finished the task of guiding his team to an emphatic victory.

Earlier, captain Cheteshwar Pujara was painstakingly slow (27, 64b) before getting out in the 35th over of the innings. At one stage, Saurashtra, put in to bat, was struggling at 131 for five in 34.1 overs, raising doubts of even posting a challenging score. But, an enterprising 134-run stand for the sixth wicket between Arpit Vasavada (85 not out, 73b, 1 x 4, 6 x 6)) and Perak Mankad (67, 48b, 5 x 4, 2 x 6) helped the team eventually post 267 for six in 50 overs.

That was the phase when J&K wilted under pressure as the bowlers lost direction and the fielding too left a lot to be desired. In another match at Uppal Stadium, opener Faiz Fazal’s century (103, 97b, 9 x 4, 3 x 6) helped Vidarbha trounce Hyderabad by 237 runs.

The disappointing for the home team was not just the batting debacle but also the failure of frontline pacers - Ravi Kiran and Mohd Siraj - who conceded 159 runs in 20 overs with the latter taking just one wicket in the slog overs.

At Thapar Stadium, Ishan Kishan’s strokefilled century (106, 75b, 13 x 4, 4 x 6) fashioned Jharkhand’s five-wicket win over Services.
