There is support for Manjot Kalra to be included in the Delhi team for the Vijay Hazare knockout phase starting here on February 21.

Kalra had played a stellar role in India winning the ICC Under-19 World Cup recently with a century in the final against Australia.

It is learnt the selectors would consider his name even though he did not figure in the Delhi team for the league phase in Himachal Pradesh. The selectors have the example of Shubman Gill, who was picked by Punjab for all its six matches and hit a century too.

The Delhi selectors, meanwhile, are busy tackling extraneous pressure by a BCCI official to pick a non-performer in the squad. The said player’s selection had caused a furore in Delhi’s cricket circles at the cost of much more deserving claimants. Even captain Ishant Sharma had privately expressed his displeasure at the player’s presence in the squad.

Similar efforts were made earlier but the Delhi Administrator Justice (retd) Vikramajit Sen had scuttled the plans of the selection committee comprising Atul Wassan, Hari Gidwani and Robin Singh (Jr).

The availability of Gautam Gambir for the knockout matches is another vexing issue confronting the Delhi selectors since the batsman is yet to confirm his fitness.
