Host Dindigul Dragons started its campaign in style with a 14-run win over Madurai Super Giants via the VJD method in a rain-shortened encounter in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) at the NPRCET grounds here on Saturday.
Chasing 147 for a win, Super Giants stuttered with top-order wickets falling consistently. Captain and opener K. B. Arun Karthik managed two sixes before left-arm spinner M. Sanjay had him caught at point in the fourth over. M. Sanjay struck in the same over, removing the other opener G. Vignesh. After six overs, Super Giants was positioned at 43 for 2, but after 10 overs, it was struggling at 65 for 5.
Dragons built pressure and the boundaries dried up. With the asking rate going up, Super Giants never recovered sufficiently, despite a few lusty blows by S. Thiyagarajan.
Opener N. Jagadeesan's 71 was the bedrock of Dragons' batting effort earlier. Sitting pretty at 84 for 2 at one stage, and then 127 for 3, Dragons lost wickets quickly towards the business end of the chase. S. V. Muruganantham, the leg-spinner, took four wickets.
The TNPL is using the VJD method to calculate targets and victory margins in rain-curtailed contests.
Brief scores:
Dindigul Dragons 142 for nine in 18 overs (revised target 146) (N. Jagadeesan 71, Muruganantham four for 22) bt Madurai Super Giants 131 for nine in 18 overs (S. Thiyagarajan 37 n.o., V.R.S. Guru Kedarnath two for 19, M.S. Sanjay two for 29) via VJD method.
