DAY THREE: STUMPS

The official word is in: no play is possible for the rest of the day. So we have to wait until Day Four for the cricket.

Join us, at 3.30pm tomorrow. Until then, it's goodbye.

ESPNcricinfo says it has started to rain again in Southampton. That could perhaps be the final nail in the coffin as far as today's cricket is concerned. But we cannot rule out a miracle, and so we'll wait patiently for the official announcement.

It's unlikely play will commence today.

There will be another inspection at 4.15pm local time (8.45pm IST).

There will be an inspection of the pitch and outfield by the umpires at 3.30pm local time (8pm IST).

It's still raining in Southampton, a mild drizzle. A wet outfield means it's going to take time for play to resume even if the rain stops.

The players have taken lunch.

The light drizzle continues and we may be in for some more delay.

No sign of play starting soon.

There's a gentle rain currently in Southampton and it's dark. Light will once again be an issue.

--On-field umpire Richard Kettleborough has been spoken to by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (ACU) after he had mistakenly taken the field wearing a smartwatch during the ongoing second Test between England and Pakistan, according to a report.

-- James Anderson would be hoping to get that one wicket remaining to grab a four-for. That would hand him his best figures for this season: he hasn't taken more than three wickets in an innings ever since the restart of Test cricket after the coronavirus pandemic.

--  Mohammad Abbas survived 20 deliveries and gave good support to Mohammad Rizwan during their partnership of 39 runs for the ninth wicket yesterday. Abbas accounted for only two of those 39 runs. How many times has he faced more deliveries in his career? 10 times, in 28 innings.

The most deliveries he faced in an innings is 78 when he scored a career-best 29 against Australia in Adelaide last year. After having batted in conditions perfect for seam and swing, he would be eager to go out there and bowl in those conditions, provided, of course, it remains that way.

-- On Day Two, Babar Azam fell three short of a half-century. That would have been his 15th Test match fifty, and his second of the series. He's fallen in the 40s once more in his Test career: he was dismissed for 49 in Johannesburg in January, 2019.

Here are our correspondents discussing their major takeaways from day two:

-- Mohammad Rizwan scored a pugnacious half-century amid wickets tumbling all around him. It's his second in Test cricket, in eight matches played (the current one is his eighth). If he gets a century, it will be his maiden Test century. Pakistan would want him to get to that mark; it would boost the spirits of the team after two gloomy days.

Day 2 report:

-- Pakistan's seamers will be waiting patiently for their chance to bowl in helpful conditions at Rose Bowl, after England's seamers enjoyed themselves on Days One and Two. Interruptions due to rain, wet outfield and bat light have meant that Pakistan's first innings is yet to be completed. How many can Rizwan add to the total?

Let's hope the rain stays away on Day Three, but the forecast isn't the best. Here's the prediction by BBC : Thundery showers and a gentle breeze, with a maximum of 23 degrees celcius and a minimum of 17 degrees.
