SCORES×

- STUMPS, DAY 1: ENGLAND 35/1 in 17.4 overs [Joe Denly - 14*(48), Rory Burns - 20*(55); Shannon Gabriel - 1/19(5)]

- And it's stumps on day one. Only 17.4 overs were bowled today. Rain has played spoilsport during international cricket's much awaited return. However, there are still four more days to go and England and West Indies would be itching to have a go at each other.

- An early Tea has been taken following the third interruption of the day.

- Further delay as the umpires are not happy with the light and the players are going back. Has been that kind of a day. First the rain interruptions and then light. After 17.4 overs, England 35/1

- Rory Burns is looking nice and composed out there in the middle after seeing off a little testing spell from the West Indies pacers. He and Jon Denly have been instrumental in rebuilding England's innings after the early loss of Sibley. Partnership is worth 35 off 95 deliveries. England 35/1 after 17 overs.

- Captain Jason Holder into the attack.

- Alzarri Joseph is introduced in the attack and Burns welcomes him with a gentle tuck just behind the square for a boundary .

- Joe Denly is showing a bit more intent as he collects a couple of boundaries as England moves ahead. The first through mid-on was more controlled as the second shot takes the outside edge and flies between third slip and gully. England 20/1 after 10 overs.

- FOUR - There's the first boundary of the Test match and it comes from the bat of Rory Burns. On the pads and Burns flicks it perfectly through the mid-wicket and the ball races away. Pure timing.  England 7/1 after 6 overs.

- The stop-start has been a cause of concerns for both batsmen and the bowlers but West Indies pacers have maintained a good line so far. Both Burns and Denly being watchful. England 3/1 after 5 overs.

- We are back again and it will be Roach, who will resume his over with Denly on strike.

- Update: Tea will now be taken at 05:00 PM local time and we are already staring at loss of overs.

- Players are going off again as the rain intensifies and the covers are back on. Has been that kind of start, stop day, so far. Over 60 overs still to go and hopefully we have a resumption. West Indies 3/1 after 4.1 overs.

- Joe Denly is off the mark with an inside edge and things don't look promising as there's a slight drizzle in the air.

- Gabriel is good to go and it will be Burns on strike, post the mini rain break.

- Batsmen and fielders are all down on the ground and Michael Holding on air informs that they are waiting for an official start.

- Oh no! Rain arrives again and the players are going off.... Frustrating for the players but West Indies will be happy as they have got a breakthrough. England 1/1 after 3 overs.

- Rory Burns is off the mark and so as England and he will be happy to get to the other end.

- Joe Denly is the next batsman in.

- WICKET - Bowled'in and it took just 10 deliveries for the first Test wicket to fall after the resumption and Gabriel has struck for the West Indies. Sibley departs for a duck. The ball just angles in, Sibley shoulders his arms and the ball kisses the top of off. West Indies are delighted and they have got the breakthrough.

- Roach starts with a maiden and it will be Shannon Gabriel who will partner Roach.

- An early review for LBW and West Indies believe they might have an early breakthrough. Burns shoulders arms to a length delivery, hits him high on the back leg... Replays show it's just hitting the off-stump.. Umpires call stays and West Indies retain the review.

- Right there, first ball after 117 days! Here we go!

- Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley out there at the crease and it will be Kemar Roach who will start proceedings with the red cherry with Burns on strike.

- Well we are all set and the players observe a moment of silence in honour of Sir Everton Weekes and then take a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter.

Playing Conditions: A minimum of 70 overs will be played, provided there is no disruption. Tea will be taken at  16:30 local time with end of day's play scheduled at 19:30. An extra half an hour has also been granted due to the rain delay.

- Playing XI:

England: Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Joe Denly, Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes (C), Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler(WK), Dominic Bess, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, James Anderson

West Indies: John Campbell, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich (WK), Jason Holder(C), Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel

- Ben Stokes wins the toss, his first as captain as England opts to bat first.

- Good news as the Toss will happen 15 minutes from now and play will start at 06:30 PM, provided there is no further rain. Fingers crossed!

- So, it's Lunch on Day one of the first Test without a ball being bowled. Not a pleasant way to start the resumption of the game amid the pandemic. Gloomy skies, but we hope there will be some action. Stay tuned!

- Early Lunch has been taken and the next inspection will be at 06:10 PM IST.

- The umpires are out in the middle for an inspection and things are looking bright at the moment, reports BBC .

- The rain has picked up and the covers are back on. Seems like we need to wait more for the game to get underway.

- West Indies Cricket Board updates: Light rain has delayed the toss here at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

- "Until we educate the entire human race, this thing will not stop." - Legendary fast bowler Michael Holding delivers a powerful message.

- News is just coming in that the toss has been delayed. The good news is, there is just a slight drizzle, which means live action will be underway shortly.

The Preview

International sport finally returns to Britain on Wednesday when England plays the West Indies in the world's first cricket Test match since the start of March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's clear the match being staged at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton is about much more than just cricket.

A smoothly run Test series, played in a strict isolated environment featuring repeated COVID-19 testing and social distancing, can lay the blueprint for future matches and tours in cricket but also events in other sports targeting a resumption.

Weather update: According to the BBC , rain will likely subside in Southampton in the next couple of hours, but the day will remain cloudy, with rain likely to return later. The good news is no heavy rain is predicted.

It's raining in Southampton, which doesn't bode well for a smooth start to the Test.

England vs West Indies: A rivalry steeped in history and greatness

The West Indies’ three-match Test series in England is an opportune moment to see in what ways the rivalry between the two may have evolved.

-------------------------------------------------

Test cricket is back after an agonising gap of four months.

When they walk onto the field, England and West Indies will set the tone for a quiet resumption of international cricket amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The safety measures to ward off the threat of the virus will make it a different spectacle, perhaps a more sobering contest, with likely less congregation among players and no spectators.

Yet, it will be welcome for cricket-starved fans, the players and the administrators.

This context itself makes the other details of the contest unduly primary. The teams have some excellent players, although the host team may have a slight edge overall.

Both teams have a potent pace attack. Ben Stokes will lead England in the absence of Joe Root, and he will have the quality of Stuart Broad and James Anderson to fall back on, and the express pace of Jofra Archer. Jason Holder will have the services of Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach, both capable of bowling very quick, besides himself.

It is the batting where West Indies may be slightly weaker on paper.

The two teams have an old rivalry, full of gladiatorial moments and extraordinary tales, and a resumption of the rivalry is welcome. Ayan Acharya revisits some famous battles .
