Big-hitting specialist Chris Gayle razed the Chittagong Vikings’ bowling attack to score an unbeaten 92 off 47 balls that featured nine sixes and six fours, playing for Barisal Bulls in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in Mirpur. His knock helped his team topple their target of 136 with five overs to go in the Twenty20. Gayle already is at the top of the batting charts this year, with 1524 runs in 32 matches, at an average of 63.50.
Gayle also has the second highest individual score in any Twenty20 this year: his unbeaten 151 for Somerset against Kent in the NatWest T20 Blast fell seven short of Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 158 for Warwickshire in the same tournament.
His latest blitz contained nine sixes, the 17th time he has smashed these many in any Twenty20 innings. The next best in this regard is McCullum, who has done it three times. Gayle occupies all four spots for the top four highest tallies in any calendar year in Twenty20s: 1532 runs in 2012, 1524 runs in 2015, 1497 runs in 2011, and 1344 runs in 2013. David Hussey comes fifth, with 1275 runs in 2010.
