Hashim Amla retires from international cricket

The 36-year-old was part of South Africa's embarassing World Cup 2019 campaign; he had a quiet tournament with only two half-centuries.

South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has announced retirement from international cricket. During the Proteas’ World Cup 2019 campaign, skipper Faf du Plessis had revealed that Amla wanted to continue.

“He said he wants to keep going, so I think, you leave it to a great player to make that decision himself. I see certainly great players almost planning their exit so, you know, if Hash is doing well and he still wants to play, he will keep playing,” du Plessis had told reporters.

Sportstar understands that Amla will continue to be available for domestic cricket and the Mzansi Super League in South Africa.

 

Amla appeared in 349 matches across three formats in his 15-year career for South Africa scoring 18,762 runs. He is the only South Africa batsman to score a triple century — 311 not out against England at The Oval in 2012.

After failing to convert good starts, Amla had played a determined knock of 80 against Sri Lanka in the World Cup to restore pride.

 

Amla maintained a steady average — 46.64 and 49.46 — in Tests and ODIs respectively. The veteran batsman became the second fastest player to accumulate 8,000 ODI runs recently. He reached the landmark in the World Cup 2019 fixture against New Zealand.
