The India vs New Zealand World Cup 2019 semifinal was halted by rain on Tuesday. Although the knockout matches, unlike the group phase games, have been assigned reserve days, the possibility of the contest moving into Wednesday brought memories of the 2002 Champions Trophy, when India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners after inclement weather made it impossible for action to start on the original and reserve day.
The final stroke of the tournament was a blow of thunder and lightning, Virender Sehwag, in an extraordinary fashion, cutting Chaminda Vaas for a six over point.
And then we had thunder and lightning from the skies, the downpour started yet again, and the replayed final of the ICC Champion's Trophy met with a watery end at the Premadasa Stadium.
Since a minimum of 25 overs could not be completed in the Indian innings due to the bad weather, India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners of the prestigious ODI tournament.
India, chasing 223 in fifty overs, was 38 for one in 8.4, with a rollicking Virender Sehwag (25) and maestro Sachin Tendulkar (7), turning out in his 300th ODI, at the crease.
The two sides, who take over from New Zealand, the victor from the last edition in Kenya, also split equally the whopping prize money of $300,000.
At 8.45 p.m. local time came the announcement that the summit clash would be abandoned.
