Bumrah struck in the death overs to bring India back in the contest.

Saifuddin's fighting half-century goes in vain as India ekes out a rather thrilling 28-run win over Bangladesh, and in the process knock Mortaza and Co. out of the competition. Credit to Jasprit Bumrah, whose death bowling once again came to India's resuce. Bumrah picked four wickets to rattle the Bangladesh lower-order when it was threatening to take the match away.

Earlier, India rode on Rohit's ton, KL Rahul's 77 and Pant's cameo to reach a commanding score. Mustafizur picked a five-for and was the highlight of the Bangladesh attack.

India become the second team after Australia to qualify for the semifinals. They next meet Sri Lanka on Saturday in what will be a dead rubber. Bangladesh, though knocked out, now have Pakistan's fate in their hands. If New Zealand eke out a win against England tomorrow and if Pakistan beats Bangladesh, Sarfaraz and Co. sail through. Jeez, a World Cup which was proving to be a damp squib at the start, is opening up and how!

===================================

Bumrah to bowl out. Saifuddin brings up his fifth with a bullet straight drive off Bumrah. Game on. GONE. Bumrah yorks him over. Cometh the hour, cometh the yorker. This man is gold dust in the death overs. Fiz comes to the crease. Bowled'em. That's the match.

SHOT! Rubel has hit India's best bowler Bumrah over his head for a rocket drive for four. Eight runs from the over. Shami returns into the attack at a crucial phase.  He has been expensive at the death, like in the last game. But he needs to hold his nerve here. Saifuddin swivels a pull to fine leg for four. Bangladesh giving this a real go now. Good comeback from Shami: ends with two dots. 36 runs in 18 balls

Bangladesh needs 51 in 30 balls. Saifuddin, unbeaten on 38, holds the key for Bangladesh.

Mortaza at the crease. Six runs and a wicket from that Bumrah over. As always, India's go-to death bowler delivers. Bhuvi continues. Mortaza greets him with a six. Bhuvi has his revenge next ball; he is out caught behind. The curtains are coming down on Bangladesh's campaign. BAN 257/8 after 44.2 overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar into the attack. Five runs from the over, including two wides. Bangladesh needs 70 runs in 42 balls. Bumrah is back into the attack. Bowled'em! It's the cutter and that length that does the trick. Bumrah breaks the nagging stand. Rahman falls for 36.

Chahal bowling out. Good over. Just four from it. Chahal today: 10-0-50-1. Shami is back into the attack. Saifuddin now carves one through extra cover for four. Four more; he's aiming for the shorter boundary and makes the most of it. 11 runs off the over. BAN 240/6 after 42 overs. Bangladesh needs 75 runs in 48 balls.

Hardik to bowl out. Saifuddin is playing a gem here. He greets Pandya with another boundary. Good comeback from Hardik. Finishes off with three dots. His figures today: 10-0-6--3.

Chahal continues. FOUR more to Saifuddin.  Rahman ends the over with another four. 11 from it. Runs coming thick and fast now. How long can the two keep going? BAN 219/6 after 39 overs.

Chahal back into the attack. Good over. Only one from it. Shami into the attack. Sabbir collects two back-to-back boundaries. Saifuddin joins the fun: hits two boundaries. 17 off that over. BAN 208/6 after 38 overs. Bumrah is back on the field.

Bumrah into his seventh. Just three runs from that over. Bumrah doing what he does best closer to the death overs: fast and full - no room to work with. Hardik into his ninth. Eight from the over.

Hardik continues. Gotcha! That's the game, set and match? Surely. Shakib falls for a valiant 66. Hardik has his third. Two runs and a wicket. Hardik so far: 8-0-46-3.

Timbaah! Bumrah strikes. Mosaddek chops on and Bangladesh slips further . Shakib actually runs the risk of running out of partners here. Sabbir Rahman comes to the crease. Five from the over.

Good over from Pandya. Just three from it. Mosaddek got an edge on the last delivery but the ball died on Dhoni behind the stumps.

Bumrah into the attack. Slip for the new batsman. India going for the kill. Shakib throws his bat at a wide ball and the outside edge races away to the third-man fence for four. Six runs from the over. BAN 169/4 after 31 overs.

Pandya into his sixth. SHOT! Stand and deliver. Seamlessly dispatched for six over long-on by Liton Das. GONE!Hardik Pandya to India's rescue yet again : short ball does the trick; hurries him into the pull and he holes out to Karthik. Mosaddek Hossain at the crease. BAN 163/4 after 30 overs.

Hardik Pandya into the attack. Shakib gets a boundary before haring back for a second to complete his fifty . Eight runs from it. Bhuvi continues. This is still anybody's game. India will be under pressure here. Remember, if India lose today then the match versus Sri Lanka becomes a must win for Kohli and Co. Nine runs from it . BAN 156/3 after 29 overs.

Bhuvneshwar has been brought back into the attack. Chaos but Liton's safe. Run out chance at both ends missed. India concede an extra run.  Three braces from it. BAN 139/3 after 27 overs.

Chahal bowls his seventh, goes for just two. Another rebuilding period for Bangladesh. Shakib, as has been the case this edition, holds the key. He's closing in on another fifty. Liton Das and Shakib had that crucial stand against the Windies. Safe to say, BD's semifinal hopes rest on this pair. BAN 133/3 after 26 overs.

Change of bowling. Shami into the attack. Liton Das at the crease. Four singles from the over. Shami has been exceptional in this tournament, save that death over spell against England. He has run in hard, attacked the crease and made the new ball move both ways. BAN 125/3 after 24 overs.

Mushfiqur cuts one away for four... pierced the gap to perfection and Chahal's poor form continues. GONE! Mushfiqur has holed out. That would do a world of good to Chahal's confidence and Team India's chances. BAN 121/3 after 23 overs.

Chahal to continue. Three runs off the over. Shakib's in ominous form. Greets Hardik with a slice behind point for four. Nine from the over.  Last five over, BAN batsmen have been collecting more than seven runs an over. Chahal into his sixth.

100 comes up for Bangladesh with that Shakib single. Hardik, meanwhile, is into his third over. The match is hanging in balance. Four singles and a brace from it. BAN 104/2 after 20 overs. Bangladesh needs 211 runs.

Chahal to continue. A slip for Mushfiqur. Four singles from the over. This is a crucial stand for Bangladesh. Two back to back boundaries for Rahim off Chahal's fourth over. 10 runs from it. BAN 98/2 after 19 overs.

Hardik Pandya has been brought into the attack. OUT! Sarkar has hit that one straight to Kohli and the Indian fielders are all smiles.  Kohli pointed at the batsman, suggesting this time he is out. Might be penalised for that. Unnecessary from Kohli. Mushfiqur joins Shakib. Good over - 2 runs and a wicket. BAN 75/2 after 16 overs.

Chahal continues. Leg-stump line from the leggie. takes the lbw out of equation against the left-handers. Leg-slip still in place. After 15 overs, BAN 73/1.

What.a.shot. Sarkar gives the charge and launches a Shami delivery over mid-on for four. Another boundary from Sarkar to end the over; this time through deep extra cover. 10 from it. BAN 69/1 after 14 overs.

Chahal into the attack. Shakib greets him with a boundary to fine-leg. Straightaway a fielder employed at leg-slip. Six from the over. M.S. can be seen getting ready to come back on the field.

Shami into the third over. Sarkar begins with a glorious cover drive before being struck on the pads. Loud appeal for lbw . Not given! India review. Meanwhile, Pant's donning the keeping gloves. Given Not Out by the third-umpire . Kohli looks disgruntled. Third-umpire didn't go to ball-tracker because ge felt the bat was too close to the ball to tell conclusively if it was pad first or bat. Sarkar survives a close call. India have lost their review. BAN 53/1 after 12 overs

Bumrah returns into the attack. Shakib plays a delightful on-drive for his first boundary of the match. Eight runs from the over. Bumrah has produced the odd unplayable ball as you would expect but he has been slightly on the shorter side so far, hence being taken for runs. BAN 47/1 after 11 overs.

Shami continues. GONE! Shami gives the breakthrough, again. That was the in-dipper at 140 clicks an hour and Tamim has chopped on. Shakib joins Sarkar. Two runs and a wicket. BAN 40/1 at the end of the first Powerplay.

Four runs off that Bhuvi over. Shami has been brought into the attack. He has a slip in place. Sarkar gets his first boundary - slices it over the infield for four. Eight overs gone. This is a promising start for the Bangla Tigers. Bhuvi into his fifth. Four singles off it . BAN 38/0 after 9 overs.

Bhuvi is in nice rhythm. This is good , tight stuff from Bhuvneshwar. He's not giving Tamim any room to work with. Four dots. 10 on the trot. Tamim steals a quick single to mid-off. Two runs from the over. Five overthrows! Can't fault Pandya for trying. Had he hit, that would've been curtains for Sarkar.  My, oh my. Bumrah has just clocked 150 on the speed gun. Six came off the over. BAN 24/0 after 6 overs.

Bhuvi to continue. Two slips in place for Tamim. Tamim's looking in good touch. He eases into a square drive to collect another four. Seven from the over. Bumrah continues. Brilliant from Jasprit. Twice in the over, he has beaten Sarkar now. That will be a maiden over. BAN 16/0 after 4 overs.

Bumrah and Bhuvi with the new ball. Good start from Bhuvi: just one run off the over. Tamim and Sarkar opening for Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Bumrah strays on Tamim's pads and the left-hander flicks it away for four. This time, he carves one through the off-side. Couple of boundaries for him. BAN 9/0 after 2 overs.

===========================

India will be a little disappointed with the score considering the start KL and Rohit gave them. Rohit continues his run glut, scoring a fourth century while KL too scored a fifty but their dismissals put the breaks on the scoring rate. Kohli was out cheaply and Rishabh Pant's cameo was perhaps the reason why India went past 300. M.S. Dhoni once again struggled to get going though he did strike a few boundaries. Mustafizur picked five. Bangladesh needs 315 to win.

========================

Fiz to bowl out. How many will MS get off the last over? Two dots... turns down single off both balls and is out caught off the third. Baffling tactics from MS. What a finish from Fiz. Picks up a five-for to restrict India to 314/9.

Dhoni begins the 48th with a couple. He follows it up with a backfoot cover drive. Two dots follow. Four more... MS has now hit two boundaries in the over. Short and wide and MS puts it away. Takes a single and keeps strike. IND 311/6 after 49 overs.

GONE! F iz strikes again; the short ball hurries Karthik who holes out after mistiming the pull. Dhoni, meanwhile, brings up the 300 with a single. Bhuvneshwar joins MS. IND 300/6 after 48 overs.

Saifuddin back into the attack. Excellent awareness from Karthik. Pierced the gap with perfection. Full delivery and Karthik has carved that one away. Absolutely vital boundary for India. Dhoni ends the over with a single. IND 297/5 after 47 overs.

Fiz returns and MS greets him with a deft cut shot for four. He steals a double off a ricochet the next ball. Nine runs from the over. Four overs to go.

GONE. Pant perishes for 48 trying to up the ante and Shakib finally has a wicket to his name. Dinesh Karthik marches out to play his first World Cup match! Just a couple of runs and a wicket. Shakib bowls out: 10-0-41-1. IND 279/5 after 45 overs.

Rubel back into the attack. Not a great start: 4Leg byes. SHOT! Dhoni finds the gap off the last ball - a pull to backward square leg and India collect nine from the 44th.

Pant continues to take the attack to Bangladesh. Welcomes Fiz with a boundary. 10 from the 42nd over. Just three runs from Shakib's ninth over. Dhoni plays out two dots. He;s six off 10 deliveries. IND 268/4 after 43 overs.

Pant is looking in good touch. Drives Saifuddin through the covers for four. Make that two in two.  A hat-trick of fours for Pant; he's switching gears effortlessly here. 250 up for India. IND 251/4 after 40 overs.

Fiz is back. Fiz has struck! And it's the big wicket of Virat who has holed out in the deep. Kohli misses out on a fifty and Bangladesh striking at the right time. Hardik Pandya is at the crease. Hardik Pandya is out. That was quick. He departs for a two-ball duck. Fiz has turned it around. Well, well, M.S. is in the house: will he be feeling the pressure? A wicket maiden. IND 237/4 after 39 overs.

Pant greets Sarkar with a boundary now. Kohli screams two and Kohli gets two. Both are excellent runners between the wickets, so rotation of strike won't be a problem. 10 runs from the over.

Right, Kohli and Pant are going after Shakib. Both pick a boundary each: Kohli whips one past mid-on before Pant sweeps a leg-stump ball for four. IND 227/2 after 37 overs.

Pant and Kohli both play a fabulous touch each. Pant takes India past 200 with a huge six over the bowler's head before Kohli brings out his wristy flick to collect a four through mid-wicket. Seven runs from the over. IND 211/2 after 35 overs.

It'll be interesting to see KL's approach now that Rohit's gone. The latter was clearly the aggressor. Virat usually takes awhile before shifting gears. Rahul will be expected to up the ante. And as we speak, Virat has unfurled an inch perfect on-drive off Rubel for four. KL has been caught behind and once again, after a start he fails to score big. Pant in at 4. Gets off the mark with a single . IND 196/2 after 33 overs.

Rubel has returned into the attack. India will be targeting a total in excess of 350 from here. Kohli gets off the mark with a single. Wonder if India could have sent Hardik in at 3 with 20 overs to spare? Three singles from the over. IND 184/1 after 31 overs.

GONE! Sarkar strikes and Rohit Sharma has thrown his wicket away right after reaching his hundred. Caught by Liton Das. Kohli joins KL. Five runs and a wicket. IND 181/1 after 30 overs.

Whoa. How did that miss the stumps? The Shakib delivery keeps low and eludes Rohit's bat. That was mighty close. He's on 99. Rohit gets to yet another 100! He has been in scintillating form this tournament. IND 176/0 after 29 overs.

Sarkar continues. Will this be the over where Rohit equals Sangakkara's record for most hundreds in a World Cup - 4. Make that 98. Four runs from the over.

Shakib back into the attack. Bangladesh needs its star all-rounder to work some magic with the ball because Mortaza and Co. are staring at a huge total otherwise. Rohit moves to 95 with a single. 96 now with yet another single - five ones off the over. IND 169/0 after 27 overs.

Rubel continues. Two singles and a brace from it. Rohit is eight shy of a fourth World Cup hundred. Soumya Sarkar into the attack. Good over, just two from it . IND 164/0 after 26 overs.

Mustafiz has been brought into the attack. Rohit Sharma goes past Sehwag to become the fifth highest run-getter for India in World Cups and what a way to reach the feat: by lifting an overpitched delivery over long-on for six. The 150 comes up for India with a quick double. Single to end the over. IND 158/0 after 24 overs.

No. no. no Rubel: can't bowl short to Rohit. He pulls it off his front foot for four more. Ominous signs these for Bangladesh. He's into the eighties. Eight runs from the over. IND 147/0 after 23 overs.

That's disappeared into the stands. Rohit's in some form. Mosaddek tosses it up and Ro accepts the gifts by tonking it over long-on for a mighty six. He ends the over with another hit to the fence. The bowlers are at his mercy, today. 13 off the over. IND 139/0 after 22 overs.

Mosaddek Hossain continues. Five singles off it. Riubel continues. Rohit's taking a brace off the third ball. Takes a single to rotate strike. Another, rather streaky single to finish the over. Four runs from it. IND 126/0 after 21 overs.

KL Rahul gets his fifty. This has been a good knock from the Karnataka batsman. A straight drive for four off Rubel Hossain -- his first over -- followed by a brace takes him to his second half-century in this World Cup. Meanwhile, India too have gone past the 100-run mark. Rahul ends the pver with a majestic cover-drive. 12 from it. IND 117/0 after 19 overs.

Shakib continues. What he did well in the early part of his spell was he didn't dish the length for Indian batsmen to pull or sweep. However he has been slightly on the shorter side for the last couple of overs. Two runs off the over. IND 99/0 after 17 overs.

Wham. Rahul says 'I can hit a six too' and launches a Mortaza short ball over long-on for a maximum before collecting three off the next ball. Good intent from KL. 10 runs from the over. The Bangla skipper is being taken apart. IND 97/0 after 16 overs.

Mortaza into his fourth over. Two singles and a brace from it. Shakib continues from the other end. He's getting lots of turn, is Shakib. He has a slip in place for Rohit. But he errs by dropping short and Rohit targets the shorter boundary with a huge six. And another fifty for Ro! IND 87/0 after 15 overs.

Shakib to continue. He has having a sensational tournament both with bat and ball, is Shakib. He'll be the biggest threat for India, especially on a pitch that is expected to assist the spinners. He's already managed to tie down the two batters. Just one coming off it. IND 74/0 after 13 overs.

Spin for the first time. Shakib Al Hasan into the attack. Excellent start from the left-arm spinner. Only two from it including a wide. Mortaza to continue. Mushfiqur still up to the stumps. ONly two from it. IND 73/0 after 12 overs.

KL is growing in confidence now. Welcomes Mortaza into the attack with a drive down the ground for four. India's off to a flying start . Mushfiqur has come up to the stumps in a bid to stop the batsmen from wandering out of the crease. Doesn't matter because Rohit still finds the fence, helps one to third-man for four. IND 69/0 after the end of the first PowerPlay.

Mustafizur is taking a pounding from Rohit. The Mumbaikar takes India past the 50-run mark with an imperious drive through the covers. Rohit's batting like a man who has a point to prove. No-ball and Rohit's dispatched that for a boundary. Fast, full and wide and the right-hander carves it past point. IND 59/0 after 9 overs.

Saifuddin errs in line; on KL's pads who's happy to tuck it fine for his second boundary. That was full and angling down leg. Follows it up with a glorious cover-drive. Another costly over for Bangladesh. 11 off it. IND 47/0 after 8 overs.

Rohit's cutting loose. How expensive will that drop be? He throws his hands at a wide delivery and the outside edge races away to the third-man fence for four. Good comeback. Just two singles from the remaining deliveries. IND 36/0 after 7 overs.

Going back to the dropped catch. It was a back of a length ball and Rohit couldn't quite get it off the middle. Tamim covered ground, went for the catch with both hands but couldn't latch on. Meanwhile, Rohit carves Saifuddin for a maximum over extra cover. Nine from the over. IND 30/0 after 6 overs.

Fizz to continue. DROPPED ! Can you believe it? Oh Dear. Rohit has been dropped; Tamim the culprit. A pull shot gone wrong and the experienced campaigner grasses an opportunity. Three off the over. IND 21/0 after 5 overs.

Mustafizur Rahman into the attack. Rohit is happy to see off three balls before taking a single. Good over so far. KL tends the over with a single. Three runs from it. Saifuddin continues. Two paced pitch? One delivery keeps low. Boundary at last for KL. The bowler errs in line; KL tucks it fine and a misfield from Shakib allows four runs. IND 18/0 after 4 overs.

Mohammad Saifuddin to share the new ball. Rohit was proactive in the first over. KL Rahul, meanwhile, continues to bide time. Five dots but KL manages to dig one out for a single. IND 11/0 after 2 overs .

Rahul on strike. A slip in place. He gets off the mark with a single. SHOT! Class written all over that Rohit pull - it sails into the square leg stands for six. A brace to end the over. 10 runs from it. IND 10/0 after 1 over.

The teams are done with their respective national anthems. Out walk the Indian openers, Rohit and KL. Will be interesting to see the duo's approach, especially after their circumspect start against England came under the scanner. Mortaza with the new ball.

TOSS REPORT| India has won the toss and elected to bat.

Update on Mayank Agarwal: The right-hander will join Team India in Leeds on Wednesday (tomorrow).

India (Playing XI): Lokesh Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli(c), Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni(w), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Liton Das, Mosaddek Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mashrafe Mortaza(c), Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman

PITCH REPORT| " England bowled a lot of cutter here. There's a lot of patches; dry patches. There are footmarks just outside the off-stump for a left-hander. The surface will bring spinners into play as the match progresses. We'll see a lot of cutters. Win toss, bat first pitch this. Bangladesh will enjoy playing India in these conditions," reckons Dada.

Virat Kohli’s men had a smooth World Cup campaign until they found their first hurdle in England. In a game that the host dominated at Edgbaston here on Sunday, India stumbled. But it is time to move on as Tuesday’s match against Bangladesh awaits the Men in Blue.

Here's K.C. Vijaya Kumar's match preview

The neighbours will clash on the same pitch that yielded a weekend run-fest of 643, a number further embellished by centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma. The venue with its short square boundaries can punish bowlers when they err in their radars and the rival attacks will be wary of muscular batting like the kind England displayed.

Despite an acutely slow start and a relative crawl in the slog against Eoin Morgan’s men, India has a strong set of willow-wielders. Rohit and Kohli are in sublime form while K.L. Rahul suffered his lone failure during Sunday’s joust. The middle-order of Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, M.S. Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav needs to maximise the fine work from the men atop the batting tree.

The quartet have had their stints in the middle but in all the runs they collectively made ranging from veteran Dhoni to rookie Pant, who just played a lone contest, it is obvious that the trait of explosive batting largely vests with Pandya. May be Pant could move into that zone but these are still early days for him in cricket’s showpiece event.

Points Table

The youngster was a bundle of nerves in his initial stint against England, sprinting for non-existent runs, diving to save himself and then emerging dishevelled from the turf. The left-hander showed he can hold his own on the global stage. His ability was never in doubt but Pant needs to reiterate that he has the temperament to prosper when the fires rage around him.

The Indian attack had a lukewarm show in the skirmish involving England though Mohammed Shami scalped five and Jasprit Bumrah had a splendid economy rate of 4.40. However, spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav went for 160 runs in their combined 20 overs. Kohli might be tempted to drop one among them and either field Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Ravindra Jadeja. Both have adequate batting credentials and that is deemed a bonus as the current Indian tail is the kind that lizards shed at the first hint of trouble. Batting coach Sanjay Bangar conceded that the bottom-half’s fragility has constricted the way the central-core performs.

Still, for all these minor quibbles, India will step in as the favourite against Mashrafe Mortaza’s men, who in a classic case of sibling rivalry, would love to stun their big brother. They have done that in the past, be it the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies or during an Asia Cup encounter at Dhaka in 2012. The last-referred clash featured Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th international ton but Mushfiqur Rahim and company ruined the maestro’s party.

Fixtures and Results

Bangladesh has shown that it can punch above its weight and it did that against South Africa and the West Indies. Shakib Al Hasan has been the pivot, crafting stupendous efforts be it in batting or while wheeling his left-arm spin. The all-rounder has aggregated 476 runs and 10 wickets so far in this World Cup. With other seniors around him like Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur and Mortaza, Shakib has lent hope to the denizens back home. Perhaps he mirrors the following line from Monica Ali’s book Brick Lane that chronicled the Bangladeshi disapora’s angst in London: “If you are strong, you withstand the storm.”

India needs a triumph to seal its semifinal berth while Bangladesh yearns for a win to keep its almost improbable last-four hopes alive. Time to say 'game on' and this is much more than the debates over whether which hilsa fish is tastier, the one you savour in Kolkata or the other you relish at Dhaka!
