Tuesday’s clash in Southampton will mark India’s entry into World Cup 2019. Not an easy task as it will be up against a side that is desperately looking for a victory after two successive losses.
Faf du Plessis and Co. will gain confidence from their past World Cup record against India. It has won three out of four times — in 1992, 1999 and 2011.
South Africa had an early exit in 2003 where India ended runner-up. In 2007, India was out in the first round after losing to Bangladesh.
Four years later in the Trans-Tasman World Cup, India made amends as it beat South Africa by a mammoth 130-run margin.
In England, India has an edge as it has won two out of three ODIs against South Africa. After the Brighton loss in 1999, it beat the Proteas in the Champions Trophy twice — in 2013 and 2017.
But again, in the overall ODI records, India has won 34 out of 83 ODIs against the Proteas. It lost 46 matches, while three had no result.
