Pat Cummins and his team-mates celebrate after Chris Woakes becomes the final wicket to fall in England's second innings, securing a 251-run win for Australia. Cummins took four for 32 in 11.3 overs in the second innings, his scalps being Rory Burns, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, in addition to Woakes.

Australian players acknowledge their supporters gathered in the stands at Edgbaston. David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, who returned to Test cricket after their bans for their roles in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal, were jeered by the home crowd for a majority of the Test. Smith made centuries in both the innings of a Test for the first time, while Bancroft and Warner failed in both the innings.

Nathan Lyon's dismissal of Joe Root was a crucial point in the Test. The England captain had made a half-century in the first innings and had been comfortable playing Lyon's off-spin on a turning fifth-day pitch before he was caught at forward short leg defending off the frontfoot.

Jason Roy was clean bowled by Nathan Lyon early on day five, which opened the floodgates for Australia. England went from 60 for one to 97 for six, handing Australia the initiative. Playing his second Test, Roy made 28 in the second innings after his 10 in the first innings.

Steve Smith's second-innings century, to go with his hundred in the first, helped Australia fight back from difficult positions in the Test. Smith's 100-run partnerships with Travis Head and Matthew Wade and day four were integral to Australia building a 397-run lead. Smith made 144 in the first innings, helping his team recover from a precarious 122 for eight to 284.

Stuart Broad took five for 86 in the first innings, thereby completing 100 Ashes wickets. He got the wicket of centurion Steve Smith, in addition to dismissing Cameron Bancroft, David Warner, James Pattinson and Tim Paine. Broad, however, took only one wicket in the second innings and England also felt the absence of James Anderson after he pulled his calf on the first morning.
