The all-rounder admitted to a breach of Level 1 of the ICC Conduct of Conduct which related to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match".

Kohli put his finger to his lips to indicate he thinks Smith has too much to say for himself after catching the Australia batsman in the tourists' 37-run win in the opening game of the three-match series.

The ICC took no action against Kohli, who made a magnificent 90 not out from only 55 balls in Adelaide, but Smith believes the India batsman's actions were unnecessary.

"He gets pretty emotional out there, doesn't he?" the Australia Test captain told Fox Sports.

"I don't think you need to do that kind of thing when someone gets out.

"It's fine to have a little bit of banter when you're out in the field, but when someone is out I don't think that's really on."

The two sides renew their rivalry at the MCG on Friday.
