Indian batter Mayank Agarwal plays a shot on the first day of the 2nd Test match between India and New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.

Hello and welcome to Sportstar's Highlights of Day 1 of the 2nd Test match between India and New Zealand from the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

DAY 1 STUMPS - INDIA 221/4 in 70 OVERS.

SESSION RECAP

India ends the day on a high with a strong comeback in the third and final session - losing just one wicket for 110 runs. Mayank notched up a stellar hundred while Saha held fort on the other end as the duo stitched a crucial 61-run partnership after Shreyas Iyer fell early in the session to become Ajaz Patel's fourth victim in the day. Both batters at the crease have looked at ease - both against spin and seam - and have put India in the driver's seat despite the host getting off to a rocky start with Pujara and captain Kohli falling in the same over.

END OF DAY 1 SESSION 3

Umpires call off play due to poor light. Eight overs still remained from the 78-over quota allotted to the rain-marred day one of the match.

IND 221/4 in 70 overs: SIX! Steps out to Ajaz and smashes it over long off for a maximum. Long off was brought in to mid off and Mayank took the bait and went all the way. Agarwal moves on to 120.

IND 213/4 in 69 overs: Southee continues to show his mastery with the ball, shaping one away before angling it in. But Agarwal is solid in his defence. Just a single from the over.

IND 212/4 in 68 overs: Saha steps down the track to Ajaz and drives through mid off for single and that's 100 runs in the session for India. Mayank punches one to long off for a single and keeps strike.

IND 210/4 in 67 overs: Southee into the attack. Moves it away slightly outside off from Mayank. He guides one to third man for a couple and that's the fifty partnership for Mayank and Saha off 114 balls.

IND 208/4 in 66 overs: Artificial lights are on as shadows lengthen at the Wankhede. Ajaz with the ball. He tosses it up on the off, inviting the drive but Mayank plays it along the ground. Goes back and punches through point for a single.

-DRINKS-

IND 207/4 in 65 overs: Mitchell delivers another maiden but does little other than fill up the overs. Hasn't looked threatening on a single occasion today.

IND 207/4 in 64 overs: Ajaz bowls full on leg stump. Saha dabs it behind for three.

IND 204/4 in 63 overs:FOUR! Perfectly placed and right off the middle of the bat and that's another boundary for Mayank with a cover drive. Mitchell continues with a fullish length on and outside off.

IND 200/4 in 62 overs: Slight leading edge to long off and a single for Mayank to end the over.

IND 198/4 in 61 overs: Maiden over from Mitchell as he bowls a benign outside off line with little swing on offer.

IND 198/4 in 60 overs: FOUR! Length ball on the legs from Ravindra and Saha goes back and turns it away behind to the boundary.

IND 193/4 in 59 overs: FOUR! And that's a hundred for Mayank off 196 balls! Beautifully driven through covers again and Mayank is charged with emotions. Leaps up and punches the air. A slightly risky shot  a couple of balls later, playing it away from the body and it hangs in the air for a while before going past point.

IND 188/4 in 58 overs: Ravindra continues. FOUR! Deft paddle sweep on a full length on middle and leg and it finds the fine leg boundary.

IND 182/4 in 57 overs: Mitchell into the attack. Sprayed on the legs and Saha tucks behind for a single. Crisp off stump line from Mitchell and Agarwal defends on the front foot.

IND 181/4 in 56 overs: Ravindra to bowl his second over. Keeps it full and skids it into Mayank to peg him back. Gives it away on the last ball by dragging it back and allowing Mayank to pull to the square leg boundary.

IND 177/4 in 55 overs: FOUR! Jamieson over-pitches if outside off and Saha strides forward to drive through covers for a boundary. Responds with a good length that bounces up on him but is too much outside off and Saha leaves.

IND 173/4 in 54 overs: SIX! Saha opens his account with a six straight down the ground. Gets to the pitch of the ball by stepping out and launches Ajaz for a maximum. Driven with a forward lean past short cover for a single to end the over.

IND 165/4 in 53 overs: Mayank dabs one to backward point and moves into the nineties. Jamieson pitches it full and outside off and the batters fend them off easily.

IND 164/4 in 52 overs: Mayank hangs back and punches through point for a couple. Quite a stat this - Ajaz Patel is still to claim a Test wicket in New Zealand. He has bowled 49 overs there in his three matches without a wicket.

-DRINKS BREAK-

IND 161/4 in 51 overs: Agarwal flicks one to deep square leg for a single and that's the only run from the Jamieson over.

IND 160/4 in 50 overs: Saha goes down on his knee and looks to sweep it fine past the keeper but misses. Saha plays out six dot ball and back to back maidens for NZ.

IND 160/4 in 49 overs: Jamieson into the attack. Just the sixth over in the day for him. Good start to his spell - maiden over.

IND 160/4 in 48 overs: FOUR AND OUT! Shreyas holes out. This one turns into Shreyas and he prods at it, getting an inside edge onto the pads that lobs to the keeper. Saha is the new batter.

IND 156/3 in 47 overs: Mayank is struggling with cramps and the physio is out tending to him. Over-pitched on the leg by Somerville and Shreyas launches it at deep mid wicket. Santner jumps and parries it back to keep it to a single. FOUR! Mayank dances down the track again and lifts it over cover. FOUR! Strays on the legs and Shreyas swivels and sweeps it behind for a four.

IND 147/3 in 46 overs: Ajaz continues from the other end. Just two singles from the over.

IND 144/3 in 45 overs: Somerville into the attack. Mayank goes back in his crease and pulls it to deep square leg for a couple. Ajaz puts in a stunning dive to save the boundary. SIX! Mayank again and he steps out again to take it as a half-volley and slice it over deep extra cover. FOUR-BYES! This one is pitched down leg and Mayank and keeper both miss it as it runs away to the rope. Poor bowling.

IND 132/3 in 44 overs: FOUR! Mayank boldly steps out and gets to the pitch of the ball to loft it over cover with Ajaz's spin. FOUR! Very full this time and Mayank stays in his crease and guides it between cover-point to the boundary. That's the 50-run partnership between the two.

IND 123/3 in 43 overs: After a short extra cover came in for Shreyas, now there is a short point. Dabs one to third man for a single. Southee keeps it on the off and Mayank opens the face to get one past point. Southee seemed to be struggling with the heat during the over.

IND 121/3 in 42 overs: Another maiden for Ajaz. Keeps it full again and on and around leg stump. Mayank stretches forward to defend comfortably.

IND 121/3 in 41 overs: FOUR! Exquisite cover drive from Mayank as Southee bowls full and tries to shape it away from him. Five from the over.

IND 116/3 in 40 overs: Ajaz continues. Good over again from Ajaz. Beats Shreyas' outside edge with some sharp away turn. They key to his success today has been slower speeds which allows him to get more turn.

IND 115/3 in 39 overs: Southee from the other end. FOUR! Beautifully driven by Shreyas through covers. Captaim Latham lets it through his legs at short extra cover.

IND 111/3 in 38 overs: Mayank with a leg stump guard and Ajaz with the ball. Ajaz continues from where he left off. Maiden over, keeping it between length and full and on the stumps.

Fans are clearly not amused with umpire Anil Chaudhury's decision against Kohli as he is greeted onto the field with loud 'boos'. Mayank and Shreyas make their way to the middle.

Live action from the post-Tea session resumes at 3:00 PM IST. Stay tuned!

- IND 111/3 at TEA -

RECAP: Pretty even stevens at tea. India got off to a solid start through Agarwal and Gill before Ajaz Patel snared Gill, Pujara and Kohli in quick succession to put India under pressure. Agarwal contiuned to play his shots, reaching a fine fifty. He has Shreyas Iyer for company. Be back with the final session shortly. Cheers

Should be last over before tea. Rachin Ravindra into the attack. Slip and short leg in place. Agarwal on strike. He gets to his fifty with a boundary to third-man - fifth Test match half-century! Dot to finish. That's tea.

IND 106/3 in 36 overs: More of Patel. Agarwal on strike. Gets a single. Iyer keeps out the next four balls.

IND 105/3 in 35 overs: Southee. Iyer on strike. Maiden for the right-arm pacer. Iyer doesn't want to take any undue risks with the break just five mins away.

IND 105/3 in 34 overs: Patel continues. Agarwal continues to play his shots - Ends the over with a boundary past point.

IND 101/3 in 33 overs: Southee. Iyer on strike. 4 byes - Southe straying in line and bowling way down legside. Blundell has no chance. Iyer drives handsomely through covers for four - immaculate timing and placement. Gets a couple off the next ball. 15 mins to go for tea.

IND 91/3 in 32 overs: Here's Patel. Iyer on strike. He is off the mark with a single. Agarwal comes down the track and goes wide over long off for six. Hit it with the turn. Follows it up with a pull shot for four. Rank short ball and punished. Agarwal into his 40s.

IND 80/3 in 31 overs: Iyer joins Agarwal. Two slips and a gully. Southee with the ball. Can Iyer emulate his debut heroics? India need him to! Maiden from Southee.

IND 80/3 in 30 overs: Patel. Loud appeal for lbw against Pujara. Not given. NZ review. Ball tracking shows the ball would've missed the leg stump. Not out. Next ball - Pujara chops on! Pujara falls for a five-ball duck. The pressure mounts. Patel getting some vicious turn. Here's Virat Kohli. Kohli has been given out lbw! He reviews. OUT ! Ball tracking has it hitting the stumps. Kohli has to go for a duck on his return. The third-umpire does not have any conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field call. A double-wicket maiden.

IND 80/1 in 29 overs: Southee back into the attack. Two slips and a gully. Mayank on strike. That first ball shaped away from a length. Some movement for Southee. Maiden.

IND 80/1 in 28 overs: Patel has bowled well but hasn't had much help from Somerville. Stumping chance missed! Beats Gill, who has skipped down the pitch, with flight and turn but Blundell fails to collect cleanly. Doesn't matter as Gill is caught at slip next ball! Pujara joins Mayank. Pujara on strike. A wicket maiden.

IND 80/0 in 27 overs: Somerville. Can he get his line right? He has a leg slip in place. Bowls outside off this time but it's short and Gill cuts it away for four. Somerville bolws outside leg again and Gill employs the sweep and gets four more. His line has been awry today. Single to finish.

IND 71/0 in 26 overs: Patel resumes after the second drinks break of the session. New Zealand could use a wicket. Try and create a bit of pressure. India cruising right now. Maiden and a gem to finish. Beats Agarwal with turn. Lured him forward and then spun it past the bat.

- DRINKS -

IND 71/0 in 25 overs: Somerville is getting some turn too but he needs to get his line right. He is bowling a tad too leg-side at the moment. Needs to move from middle and leg to more off stump. 4 from the over.

IND 67/0 in 24 overs: Patel has settled into a nice rhythm here. Just two off this over. Indian openers, save the occasional ball, have looked unfazed.

IND 65/0 in 23 overs: Somerville. Mayank on strike. Slip, short leg and short mid-on for Gill and Mayank. Just one from that over.

IND 64/0 in 22 overs: Patel. He is getting appreciable turn and bounce already. Indian spinners will be licking their lips. Meanwhile, another tidy over from Patel - just one off it.

IND 63/0 in 21 overs: Somerville. Slip, short leg and short mid-on for Gill and Mayank. Was turning out to be a quiet over until Gill dismissed the last ball over the deep midwicket stand for six. Gill has looked imperious today.

IND 56/0 in 20 overs: Here's Patel. Solid start for both batters. Good opportunity to convert this start into a big one. Meanwhile, Patel beats Gill's outside edge with sharp turn. Dot to finish. Maiden over.

IND 56/0 in 19 overs: Gill brings up the fifty stand with a single off Somerville. FOUR! Agarwal gets a boundary past deep midwicket, off the inner half of his bat. Two singles off the last two balls.

IND 49/0 in 18 overs: Patel continues. Gill takes a single first ball. Five dots to finish the over. Just a reminder - 78 overs are scheduled to be bowled today, weather and light permitting.

IND 48/0 in 17 overs: Somerville into the attack. Tidy start. Just three off the over. Agarwal got a full toss, which he hit to the right of wide long-on for a couple.

IND 45/0 in 16 overs: Patel. Agarwal on strike. Another maiden. Ajaz found turn and bounce off the second ball to beat the outside edge of Mayank. Blundell took the bails off. Umpire reviewed for caught behind and stumping - not out on both accounts.

IND 45/0 in 15 overs: Jamieson. Gill on strike. Maiden over. Jamieson hasn't found much movement but Gill continues to bat outside his crease.

IND 45/0 in 14 overs: Patel continues. Agarwal on strike. Three dots later, Mayank shimmies down the wicket and launches Patel over long-off for his first six of the match. That was nicely tossed up, made room and swung it hard. Six from the over.

IND 39/0 in 13 overs: Jamieson replaces Southee. Change of ends for him. FOUR ! Jamieson finds Gill's outside edge but the ball bisects the gap between slip and gully and runs away to the fence. The ball isn't swinging at all at the moment. Four from the over.

IND 35/0 in 12 overs: Patel to resume after break. Slip and short leg for Gill. Gill gives him the charge and goes over the top of mid-off for four. He takes a quick single and gets off strike. Agarwal on strike. Two dots to finish.

- DRINKS BREAK -

IND 30/0 in 11 overs: Sixth over for Southee. Gill batting outside his crease. Gill is getting forward and defending. He has been quite compact in his defence so far. Single to Gill off the last ball.

IND 29/0 in 10 overs: Patel continues. Maiden over from the left-arm spinner. He was pretty full throughout that over. Mayank happy to defend.

IND 29/0 in 9 overs: Southee into his fifth. A single off the first ball for Mayank. A couple of dots later, Gill gets a single. Mayank picks up a quick single next ball. Dot to finish.

IND 26/0 in 8 overs: Spin inside first 10 as Ajaz Patel comes into the attack. Slip and short leg for Mayank. Just a single off the last ball and Mayank keeps strike.

IND 25/0 in 7 overs: Southee. Gill on strike. Two dots and a crisp drive for no run. Ends the over with a peach, does Southee. That one came back in from a full length. Gill attempting a drive, misjudges it. Maiden.

IND 25/0 in 6 overs: Jamieson. Agarwal gets a boundary to third-man. Nearly squared up but gets a thick outside edge. Ends the over with a bouncer - Mayank happy to duck under it. Four from the over.

IND 21/0 in 5 overs: Southee. Mayank happy to leave the ball alone at the moment. Three away going balls so far. Gets forward and defends the fourth ball. Next ball, gets a single to extra cover. Dot to finish.

IND 20/0 in 4 overs: Jamieson continues. Gill is standing outside the crease to negate the swing KJ tends to get. Apart from the first three balls of the match, there hasn't been much swing on offer so far. One single and a three from that over.

IND 16/0 in 3 overs: Here's Southee. Mayank clips one off his pads for four more. India dealing in boundaries at the moment. Five dots to wrap up the over.

IND 12/0 in 2 overs: Kyle Jamieson to share the new ball. Gill on strike. Three slips and a gully. KJ errs in line and length; Gill flicks a half volley through deep midwicket for four. Follows it up with an exquisite boundary, this time through off-side. Last ball is flicked away for four more. 12 off the over.

IND 0/0 in 1 over: Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal to open. Mayank to take strike. Southee with the new ball. Three slips in place. Swing first ball. Mayank shoulders arms. Three dots to start the over. He has got the ball to shape away. An optimistic appeal for lbw off the fifth ball but there was a clear inside edge. A dot to finish.

Final session: 15:00 PM to 17:30 PM

9:50 am: Kane Williamson has been ruled out from the Mumbai Test due to a long-standing elbow injury. Tom Latham will lead the side in his absence.

Update: Meanwhile, the 9.30am inspection has happened. There is going to be another one at 10.30am.

9:30 am: Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja ruled out of the 2nd Test due to niggles.

Update: Kane Williamson might not play today because of his nagging elbow problem.

Pitch Report from Ajit Agarkar and Deep Dasgupta: There's a bit of moisture, but this might hold because the pitch has been under the covers. This will certainly spin, because I can see cracks and these will open up with the sun out. Because of the moisture on Day 1, there will be seam, so if you bat first you have to bat well. This might be a good toss to lose.

Here's Shayan again: The Maharashtra government has approved 25 per cent crowd capacity, but so far, stands are empty. One can see Sudhir Gautam waving the tri-colour from the Sachin Tendulkar stand.

On-field umpire Anil Chaudhary: We are not starting on time. Our concern is run-up and the close-in areas, so hoping for it to improve. "Our main concern is the 30-yard (circle) and the bowlers' run-ups," says umpire Nitin Menon. "The conditions will not be 100 per cent because it has rained last two days. But once the sunshine is out, we may get better conditions."

TOSS DELAYED DUE TO WET OUTFIELD. INSPECTION AT 9:30 AM IST.

Our man on the ground, Shayan Acharya, has this update: Slightly soggy surface, but it hasn't rained since last evening

PREVIEW:

Test cricket's return to Mumbai after five years has been marred by incessant rains and the fear of COVID-19's Omicron variant. It has forced the organisers to allow just 25 per cent crowd in the stadium.

However, the Test is crucial as a win here would declare the series-winner and also take them up in the ICC World Test Championship points table.

Virat Kohli's return to the side after a short break augurs well for the host as it prepares to field the best XI. With more showers predicted, chances are high that play could be disrupted on the first day, thus making it more crucial for the teams to make a wise choice, in terms of picking the utility players.

New Zealand may add some spice with the inclusion of Neil Wagner, who had dismissed Gill and Rahane in the World Test Championship final in Southampton earlier in June.

The Kane Williamson-led side earned a draw in the first Test despite losing nine wickets, and that would certainly boost the Black Caps’ confidence ahead of the series-defining fixture.
