India Blue wins U-19 Challenger Trophy

India Blue beat Sri Lanka Board President XI by 95 runs in the final of the BCCI’s Challenger Trophy Men’s Under-19 one day tournament at the Brabourne Stadium, Cricket Club of India, on Saturday.

India Blue beat Sri Lanka Board President XI by 95 runs in the final of the BCCI’s Challenger Trophy Men’s Under-19 one day tournament at the Brabourne Stadium, Cricket Club of India, on Saturday.

Skipper Himanshu Rana (73, 90b, 10 x 4s) and wicket-keeper Urvil Patel (57, 52b, 4 x 4s, 1 x 6) raised 120 runs for the second wicket in 18. 4 overs and thereafter Manoj Bhandage scored a 50 ball 53 (4 x 4s, 2 x 6s) for their side to post a modest 244. 

Invited by the BCCI at the request India under-19 coach Rahul Dravid, the SLBP XI faltered at the start of the chase with right hand medium pacer Shivam Mavi removing the top three batsmen in 8.1 overs. Left arm spinner Ninad Rathva took three wickets as the visitor folded up for 149.

In the play off match at the Wankhede Stadium, India Green got the better of India Red by 21 runs.

Dravid and the CCI President Kekoo Nicholson presided over the prize distribution function and the India junior coach gave away the Challenger Trophy to the winning captain Rana.

The Challenger Trophy was a selection trial tournament for the ICC Under -19 World Cup to be held in New Zealand from January 13 to February 3. The 15 member Indian team and other probables will be selected on Sunday.

India Green 285 for 6 in 50 overs (Aryan Juyal 73, Harvik Desai 66, Mohit Jangra  49 not out) beat India Red 264 in 48 overs (Anuj Rawat 97, Riyan Parag 50, Ishan Porel 3 for 62, Pankaj Yadav 5 for 57).
