Australia’s captain Steve Smith was dismissed cheaply for once, out caught for eight off Ravindra Jadeja.
Matt Renshaw dug in to carve out a valuable knock.
Renshaw scored his second half-century of the series.
Renshaw was dismissed for 60 by Jadeja and by this time, Australia was only 55 away from India’s 189.
Australia slumped to 163 for 5 with two wickets within three overs of each other. Ishant Sharma was rewarded for accurate and aggressive bowling throughout the day with the wicket of Mitchell Marsh.
Shaun Marsh scored 66 to take Australia past India’s total, before falling to Umesh Yadav 5.5 overs before close of play. Australia ended the day on 237 for 6.
