Matt Renshaw and David Warner began the day positively for Australia, collecting 82 runs for the first wicket. Warner was eventually bowled by Umesh Yadav and his dismissal was followed by Renshaw’s toilet break.
David Warner was the first batsman to be dismissed, bowled by Umesh Yadav for 38 in the 28th over.
The Indian spinners made their presence felt, denting Australia’s top order. By the time Steve Smith got out, dismissed by R. Ashwin, Australia had squandered its start and was struggling at 149 for 4.
Yadav went on to claim four wickets in the day. His victims were Warner, Matthew Wade, Steve O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon.
Mitchell Starc’s attacking half-century (unbeaten) mitigated Australia’s position at the end of Day One. Starc combined with No. 11 Josh Hazlewood to add 51 for the last wicket.
