Looks like Dinesh Karthik has picked up a thing or two from Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The Indian wicketkeeper, who has returned to the Test fold after a long hiatus, made the outing memorable for his team-mates, communicating with Ravichandran Ashwin in Tamil.
As Ashwin put the England batsmen under pressure on the first day of the first Test on Wednesday, Karthik made it a point to encourage his state-mate from behind the stumps in their local language. While that boosted Ashwin’s confidence, the England cricketers found it difficult to understand what the stumper was trying to convey to the spinner. The entire conversation was caught in the stump mike, and soon became the talking point.
Interestingly, even Dhoni converses with the bowlers regularly in Hindi and most of his talks have become viral on the social media platforms in the past. On Wednesday, it was DK's turn!
With most of the England cricketers featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) these days, most of them can understand a bit of Hindi. But with Karthik communicating in Tamil, the host players were left confused.
This, however, is not the first instance.
Usually, players coming from different states interact with their state-mates in their local language. Mumbai cricketers, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma, are often heart interacting in Marathi while on the field. Similarly, there was a time when Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag were known for talking to each other in Punjabi. Even now, captain Virat Kohli communicates in Punjabi-accented Hindi with players from the north.
While this has been a trend in Indian team, England was surely stumped by Karthik’s Tamil wordplay.
