Indian captains with most Test wins at home:Virat Kohli - 22* , MS Dhoni - 21 wins
In 140.2 overs, the Test is the shortest match with a result since 1935 , where the Bridgetown Test was completed in 112 overs with England beating West Indies.
India 49/0 after 7.4 overs: 4,4, ., 6 - Rohit Sharma finishes it off in style! A 10-wicket for India. Rohit latched onto some ordinary bowling from Root and finished with a massive six over long-on.
India 32/0 after 5 overs: Rohit has his share of fun as well as he dances down to Leach to cream a boundary through long-on. Leach continues to finish the over with a fuller line and keeps Rohit quiet. India 28/0 after 4 overs: Gill goes downtown. Root loops one in and Gill steps down and sails it over the long-on boundary for six. The reaction of the England skipper says it all. India on a rampage en route a thumping win.
India 17/0 after 3 overs: And Gill resumes the chase with a short-arm jab to the boundary. A couple of wry balls from Leach before he straightens his line to turn the ball square.
Right, we are back for what will most probably the final session of the Test . We were just warming up for the weekend. Sigh.
That would be supper. Manic session of cricket. Axar Patel and R. Ashwin ran through England's line-up as records tumbled. Ashwin became second-fastest ever to 400 Test wickets while Patel got the distinction of being the first bowler to snap up 11 wickets in a Day-Night Test. India now need just 38 more to go 2-1 up in the series.

India 11/0 after 2 overs: Joe Root shares the new ball. Unreal. He goes for just two. That will be supper break.
India 5/0 after 1 over: A rare mis-field and a full-toss from Leach helps Rohit open his account. Probably, the next over is the last before the break too.
The Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill walk out. Jack Leach takes the new ball. 49 to win, 36 overs left in the day! Oh, what a day.
England has been put through a trial for fire and the Test spun very much like the 22-yard patch at the middle from one side to another. India needs 49 to win and the openers will come out for a brief stand ahead of the Dinner Break.
England 81 all out after 30.4 overs: Sundar to Anderson. OUT! And Sundar has one to his name. Anderson tries the reverse sweep and the ball finds the under-edge. Pant's fine glvoework on the day does the rest as India is 49-run target for the win! James Anderson c †Pant b Washington Sundar 0 (3b)

Washington Sundar gets the ball for the first time in the Test! England 80/9 after 30 overs: Ashwin to Leach. OUT! Bread and butter for Ashwin as he finds the outside edge off Leach who fails to reach the ball. The deflection moves to Rahane in slips who makes no mistake. England 80/8 after 29 overs: Axar to Foakes. OUT! And the mighty Foakes' defense is breached. It seems like Axar just runs in through a normal routine of practise. The ball tails in once again from the length and narrowly misses Foakes' bat to hit the pads. Axar has 11, the first to do so in a D/N Test! Ben Foakes lbw b Patel 8 (28b)
England 77/7 after 27 overs: Leach and Foakes latch onto every measure of possibility. Two wizards are riding onto their 14th successive over and the pitch seems to be more dreadful by the minute.
England 68/7 after 24 overs: Ashwin to Archer. OUT! NUMBER 400 for Ravichandran Ashwin! Probably one of his least hyped wickets as a simple full delivery onto Archer's pads has him wrapped up. Fourth Indian to 400 wickets while being the second fastest overall! The legacy continues with the brilliant workhorse, Ash! Jofra Archer lbw b Ashwin 0 (2b)
England 66/6 after 22 overs: Ashwin to Pope. OUT! Ashwin is pumped as he pick Test scalp No. 399! A ripping delivery zips in to break Pope's defense once again as Ashwin messes the stumps. Sheer brilliance from Ashwin as he bowls the quicker one, straight in line for the off-stump. Pope lunges forward and then moves back and across to squander his wicket.
England 56/5 after 19 overs: Axar to Root. OUT! 10-wicket haul for the local boy! Brings in the ball to Root once again and it keeps slightly low to hit his pads. Root knows he played for the wrong line and instantly walks back. Axar's been on target almost every ball and the effort has paid rich dividends.

England 54/4 after 18 overs: And Ashwin has Stokes again. Regulation dismissal in their usual sub-plot as Ashwin brings in the ball to hit Stokes' pads as he plays down the wrong line. 11th time Ashwin has got his man and the offie also has his 600th International wicket! England 48/3 after 15 overs: Axar hits Root's pads and Anil Chaudhary judges it out. Root unsure but goes for the review. The replays show a tight call for the third umpire and he indeed spends a lot of time on it. The ball seems to take a slight deviation from the bat to the pad and that's the vague conclusion the umpire has come up to. Root survives and Kohli has a short exchange with Anil Chaudhary who himself seems to be taken aback by the third umpire's decision.
England 32/3 after 12 overs: Stokes survives! There's no array of plans against his nemesis Ashwin as he lunges and attempts a slog sweep only to find the top-edge. Luckily for him, the ball misses Axar Patel at mid-on by a few yards.
England 22/3 after 9 overs: Axar to Sibley. OUT! There goes No.3. Axar runs riot over the English top-order. An act of desperation from Sibley as he goes for a wild slog off a full ball from Axar. Late by a fraction and Axar induced an under-edge that is gathered by Rishabh Pant. Dom Sibley c †Pant b Patel 7 (25b)

England 16/2 after 6 overs: Ashwin has been a tad pale in comparison to Axar who has been absolutely nailing with his precision. A couple of excellent leaves from Root saves him some more time at the crease. A wicket very much lingers in the air.England 10/2 after 3 overs: India loses a review. Ashwin continues his around the wicket ploy and turns one in sharply to hit Sibley's pads. The replays suggest that the ball was missing the top of the stumps and Sibley survives for the moment. Spin from both ends with Ashwin taking the new ball.
England 1/2 after 1 overs: What a start for INDIA! Axar Patel on the money from ball one! Tails in the ball sharply with inch-perfect precision and the ball castles the stumps. Crawley is not in the picture as he misses it altogether. Bairstow, the new man , comes and goes! Axar nearly had him first ball as Bairstow misses the sweep and the ball hits the pads. The review saves him but not for long as Axar darts in another snorter that moves inward to rattle the stumps again! England is delirious as it has no clue what struck it. We are back for the 2nd session. England openers Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley walk out. India takes the field with Axar Patel taking the new ball! Straight to business.
========================================== And the teams will have Tea! What a start for England as it is led by the skipper in a new avatar. Joe Root's sensational figures of 6.2-3-8-5 have rocked India hard with Jack Leach picking the key men, Rohit and Rahane early to begin the demolition job. A cusp of poor batting and ripping deliveries have cast India's swift downfall as it found itself reduced to dust from 98/2 to 145 all out. With 20 wickets falling in four sessions, one would imagine the game to finish at the end of the day or early on Day 3. England has got itself into a position where the outcome of the game has become unpredictable.

India 145 all out after 53.2 overs: Root wraps up the Indian innings! Bumrah is snarled with a ball drifting into him, hits the pads and the umpire raises the finger instantly. India 144/9 after 53 overs: Bumrah and Ishant put up their own fight. And on the way, Ishant has brought up his first international six in his 100th Test!

India 135/9 after 50 overs: Root removes Ashwin. Poor given the circumstances but there's nothing much that Ashwin could do. Ashwin goes for a hoick and top-edges it straight to deep square. Root has four! Ravichandran Ashwin c Crawley b Root 17 (32b 3x4)
India 125/7 after 46 overs: Two wickets for ROOT! Absolute peach from Root to dismiss Sundar! He is turning it on here with the ball, folks! Root pitches it in middle and gets a tinge of turn that beats the outside edge and smashes the stumps to dismiss Sundar. Axar Patel, the new man drags a loose ball outside off from Root straight to short cover. A dramatic turnaround in the course of this match as Leach and Root have done all things right this afternoon. Root's figures read 3-3-0-3!
And now, you could predict the outcome of this one.
India 117/6 after 42 overs: Root to Pant. OUT! Root strikes first ball! Come from around the wicket and darts one in outside off that turns away from Pant after pitching. Pant dished out to push it away and Root found the edge gobbled by Foakes in a snap. England well and truly back in this one as India loses its key men early here.
Skipper Joe Root into the attack India 117/5 after 41 overs: Leach to Rohit. OUT! Leach loops a slower one into Rohit who stretches forward in his bid for a sweep. The ball shoots up by a fraction and Rohit missed the ball altogether. Excellent call from the umpire as he adjudged it out. Rohit went for the review but the replays suggested that he was a goner. A fine knock comes to an end but Leach has put England right back into the contest. Rohit Sharma lbw b Leach 66 (96b 11x4)
India 115/4 after 39 overs: Leach to Rahane. OUT! Leach drifts in one quickly and Rahane makes the mistake of dropping back into the crease. The ball skids into him and hits the pads plumb in front to dismiss the vice captain. Rahane's woes at home continue. Rishabh Pant walks in to join Rohit at the crease. Ajinkya Rahane lbw b Leach 7 (25b 1x4)
The groundsmen scrape off a heap of dust near the landing mark of the bowler at Leach's end which brings a brief halt in play.
India 108/3 after 36 overs: Rohit is up and running! Anderson drags it short and Rohit pounces on it and smashes it through backward point. He follows it with a stifling backfoot punch through the covers to the boundary as England has been unsettled early.
India 100/3 after 35 overs: And Rohit takes India to 100 with a single. Jack Leach has found good turn in his first over. Leach pushes the ball short to Rahane and surprises with a drifter that turns sharply.
India 99/3 after 34 overs: Anderson attacks Rahane's stumps with three good length deliveries and realises that the batsman is at pressing forward to them. Jimmy quickly corrects the line and beats the edge with a fuller ball.

10 minutes away. Could possibly be the most decisive session for England in this Test and the series in itself as well.
England's bowlers have their task cut out under the searing heat in the first session. Their major threat lies ahead in a menacing Rohit Sharma, who can virtually take the game awat single-handedly. Rohit has had his fair share of luck yesterday as Root and Co. failed to create constant pressure. However, Rohit's supreme movement and compact batting led India out of a blotch.

Rohit Sharma needs 53 runs more to become the second Indian to 1000 Test runs in the World Test Championship. The Indian opener could also become the fastest Asian opener to 1000 Test runs if he adds 53 to his tally.

“It’s very frustrating. We're behind the game and we wanted those little 50-50 situations to go our way. That’s the way it goes sometimes. It’s certainly not our day. It does not help our chances," Zak Crawley on umpiring decisions that went against England on Day 1.
“Since the ball was skidding, you prefer bowling wicket-to-wicket because if the batsman tends to play on the backfoot, you have a good chance of getting an lbw or bowled. I was discussing the same with Ash that the ball wasn’t turning a lot so we planned to bowl wicket-to-wicket,” Axar Patel on his bowling plans on Day 1.

PITCH UPDATE: The pitch looks dry. We do see some cracks. The soil has come from Mumbai and is red in colour. The pace will be a little quicker compared to Chennai, feel the experts.
