Karun Nair ground a tiring England attack on Monday while becoming the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to score a triple hundred in Test cricket. Nair's 381-ball 305 put him in the elite company of Garry Sobers and Bob Simpson as the only batsmen to have converted maiden Test 100 to a triple century.
Karun Nair, who began day four at 71, increased his scoring rate as he progressed towards 300. His century took 185 balls. The double ton was reached in 306 deliveries. The remaining hundred took a mere 75.
"The message was to attack in the third session. We had a set overs to declare on, but when I got closer to 300, they pushed it back. I'm thankful to the team management," Nair said after the day.
Nair, who's three innings old in Test cricket, also overtook Len Hutton to be the quickest to a Test triple century. Hutton's 364 against Australia in 1938 came in his ninth innings.
Nair also became the quickest to score a double ton for India. Vinod Kambli did so in his fourth innings. He also overtook his skipper, Virat Kohli's 235, to be the Indian with the highest individual score against England.
In his 37 first-class matches, Nair has scored 2845 runs at an average of 52.68.
