Ashwin got rid of Blundell.   -  SPORTZPICS

Welcome to Sportstar's LIVE coverage of Day 5 of the first Test match between India and New Zealand from the Green Park International Stadium in Kanpur.

R Ashwin: "We were bowling in good areas, we knew we had time but light was always going to come into play in the last session. It happened every day of the match. Test cricket is not one of those formats where you come out and bowl good four overs. I am someone who wants to play this format. These are milestones that are constantly kept tab on. But as Rahul bhai says, it's not about runs or wickets, it's about how many memories you make."

Here's Jadeja. Patel on strike. Survives six balls. Play called off due to bad light. New Zealand have pulled off a heist. Kane Williamson is walking out, a shake of hands between him and Rahane. Stunning Test match. Both teams gave it their all but in the end, New Zealand hung on by the barest of margins. Kudos to Rachin Ravindra - what a knock on Test debut. Memorable game. Props to Shreyas Iyer too, who had an excellent debut match. The series stands at 0-0 heading into the final Test in Mumbai.

NZ 165/9 in 97 overs: Axar continues. Another light check. And the umpires are happy with the light. Ravindra gets one away for four - ball eludes Shreyas at leg slip.

NZ 161/9 in 96 overs: Ashwin. A lbw review against Patel off the last ball. Not out given by the on-field umpire. Pitching outside off. Not out.

NZ 161/9 in 95 overs: Ravindra successfully plays out another over, this time it's Axar.

NZ 161/9 in 94 overs: Here's Jadeja. 2 runs from the over. The umpires are checking light again. It's fine for now.

NZ 159/9 in 93 overs: Ashwin. Another maiden and another over out of the way. The umpires checked light at the start of the over and concluded it was fine for now.

NZ 159/9 in 92 overs: Jadeja to Patel. Seven men around the bat. Just two from that over, more importantly for New Zealand, both batters survive another over.

NZ 157/9 in 91 overs: Ashwin the the ball. Patel takes a couple off the first ball. Six men around the bat. Five dots and a brace from that over.

NZ 155/9 in 90 overs: Here's Jadeja. Southee has been given out lbw. He reviews straightaway. Three reds and Jadeja has another one. India one wicket away from a big win. Ajaz Patel is the last man in. Plays out the last four balls.

NZ 155/8 in 89 overs: Ashwin to Ravindra, starts with the carrom ball - he shoulders arms and the ball whizzes past the off-stump. Dot to finish - another maiden.

NZ 155/8 in 88 overs: Jadeja to Southee, three dots. Southee gets a boundary off the last ball.

NZ 151/8 in 87 overs: Ashwin to Ravindra. Tim Southee the new man in. Four dots and 4 byes off the fifth ball. Dot to finish.

NZ 147/8 in 86 overs: Here's Jadeja. GONE! Jamieson has been adjudged lbw off the last ball. Wicket maiden.

NZ 147/7 in 85 overs: Ashwin with the new ball. Jamieson on strike. Nearly a wicket for Ashwin but Pujara at short leg misses a difficult chance. Jamieson survives.

NZ 146/7 in 84 overs: Min overs left: 12. Jadeja after the break. Jamieson on strike. Three dots and a couple for Jamieson. A single next ball. Dot to finish.

= DRINKS =

NZ 143/7 in 83 overs: The new ball has been passed on to the on-field umpire. India haven't taken it yet. Here's Ashwin to Jamieson. The final hour has begun, which means min 15 overs left. Just a single.

NZ 142/7 in 82 overs: More of Jadeja for Ravindra. Fourth umpire is ready with the new ball. Meanwhile, Ravindra collects four off a thick outside edge that eludes Rahan at slip and runs away to the fence. Dot to finish.

NZ 138/7 in 81 overs: Ashwin to Jamieson. Four men crowding Jamieson. He defends the first three balls without fuss. India haven't taken the new ball so far. Another maiden, that's four in a row now.

NZ 138/7 in 80 overs: Ravindra has been adjudged lbw off Jadeja. He has reviewed it. Impact is outside off and Ravindra survives. Good over from Jadeja - another maiden. 80 gone and the new ball is available.

NZ 138/7 in 79 overs: Ashwin to Blundell. Bowled'em! Ashwin gets another one. Very unusual wicket that. The ball landed on the footmark after hitting the inside half of the bat and hit the stumps. Kyle Jamieson is in next. Jamieson plays out three dots. Wicket maiden.

NZ 138/6 in 78 overs: Jadeja. Ravindra on strike. Ravindra has been compact in defence. Jaddu has been targetting the rough, has caused trouble every time he has landed it there. Meanwhile, another maiden.

NZ 138/6 in 77 overs: Ashwin. Light is fading quickly. Ravindra on strike with fpur men at catching positions breathing down his neck. The floodlights are on now. Ravindra gets three off the fifth ball. Appeal for lbw against Blundell. Reviewed by Rahane. Original decision - not out. No bat involved. Ball tracking shows the ball missing the leg stump by a big margin.

NZ 135/6 in 76 overs: The unrelenting saga of maidens continues with Jadeja keeping it tight to Blundell.

NZ 135/6 in 75 overs: Ravindra with a solid defence against Axar and another maiden. The light is fading and India will probably not bowl the 20 overs that remain in the day's play.

NZ 135/6 in 74 overs: Blundell continues to block everything Jadeja's throws at him. Maiden over.

NZ 135/6 in 73 overs: Four-byes for NZ as Ravindra leaves outside off and the turn deceives the keeper to trickle past him.

NZ 131/6 in 72 overs: Jadeja continues. Turn for Jadeja as Blundell gets a leading edge to the slips trying to flick a full length on the legs.

NZ 131/6 in 71 overs: Axar to Ravindra. Four close fielders preying on the debutant. Defends with a good forward stretch. Maiden over.

NZ 131/6 in 70 overs: OUT! Jadeja gets Williamson. That's a huge wicket and that could be the game for India. The skipper committed the error of going on the backfoot and this one from Jadeja skidded on and stayed low to hit him straight on the pads. India is four wickets away from victory. Jadeja to Ravindra now. Opens his account with an outside edge to third man that fetches him three.

NZ 128/5 in 69 overs: Fourth maiden on the trot. Axar beats Blundell's outside edge a couple of times with some sharp turn.

NZ 128/5 in 68 overs: Peach from Jadeja! Straightens from an off stump line and beats Williamson's outside edge. Third straight maiden over.

NZ 128/5 in 67 overs: Tight on the stumps from Axar and maiden over. Blundell is wary of the one that pitches low and skids onto the stumps and thus stretches forward to defend. The last ball skids on and he is found marooned inside the crease.

NZ 128/5 in 66 overs: Jadeja continues. Pegs Williamson back with good line and length. The last one skids into him and Williamson gets his bat down in time to fend it off.

NZ 128/5 in 65 overs: OUT! Axar removes Nicholls. Trapped him in front and he reviews. No bat involved and technology confirms it hits middle and leg. It was pitched on length on off stump and it came in and thudded on his back thigh. New batter Blundell goes into his crease and guides it to mid wicket for two.

NZ 126/4 in 64 overs: Jadeja to complete his over. Nicholls on strike. Pitched up on the stumps and he defends with a forward stretch. Good length this time and he fends it off on the backfoot. A quick single for him with a flick to square leg and he is off the mark.

Back with live action shortly and what a contest we have on our hands. While New Zealand's chances of a win are pretty much snuffed out, India is still in contention.

TEA DAY 5 - NZ 125/4 in 63.1 overs

RECAP: The session belonged to India. The wicket of Taylor just before tea should lift the spirits of Rahane's men. There was no real intent from the NZ batters to up the scoring. India, on the other hand, needed wickets and they got them through Ashwin and Jadeja. New Zealand need 159 runs with six wickets in hand. Williamson still out there. We will be back with the final session soon. Cheers

GONE! Jadeja, you beauty. Gets Ross Taylor at the stroke of tea. Given out lbw. That's also the last ball before tea.

NZ 125/3 in 63 overs: Axar to KW, no run. Three dots on the trot. Axar trying to target the rough. KW happy to defend as he plays out another maiden off Axar.

NZ 125/3 in 62 overs: Loud appeal for lbw vs Taylor. Not given. Good decision. Would have missed the leg stump. Taylor opens his account off the 23rd ball he faced with a couple off Jadeja.

NZ 123/3 in 61 overs: Axar replaces Ashwin. Slip and a gully. Axar bowls a maiden. KW and Ross Taylor seemed to have pulled down the shutter with tea just around the corner.

NZ 123/3 in 60 overs: Jadeja to Taylor, two dots. Bharat from behind the stumps: "ek wicket, ek wicket chahye, baaki sab gir jayenge ek session mein (need one more wicket, the rest will fall in one session". Six dots and it is another maiden; Jadeja's first this innings. Another no-ball! Dot to finish. New Zealand need 161 runs.

NZ 122/3 in 59 overs: Ashwin to Williamson - three dots. Three more and Ashwin bowls another maiden. There's no real intent from these two to up the scoring rate, not yet. India would love to get one more wicket before tea.

NZ 122/3 in 58 overs: Here's Jadeja. Four successive dots. Williamson takes a single off the fifth, driven through sweeper cover. Taylor keeps out the last ball.

NZ 121/3 in 57 overs: Ashwin to Williamson - no run. Make that three dots on the trot. Williamson flicks the fourth ball to midwicket for a single. Couple of dots to finish. Ashwin was trying to get Taylor stumped down the leg side. Bharat took off the bails. Umpires are checking now. NOT OUT!

NZ 120/3 in 56 overs: Jadeja to Williamson - no run off the first two balls. A single off the fourth ball for KW. Two dots to Taylor to end the over. Hang on, the last ball that Jadeja bowled was a no-ball. Dot to finish.

NZ 118/3 in 55 overs: GONE! There's the breakthrough. Latham chops on off Ashwin! Ashwin has gone past Harbhajan Singh's Test tally of 417 wickets. What a moment to notch up a landmark like that. Taylor joins Williamson. A slip, leg slip and short leg in place. Four dots to end the over.

NZ 118/2 in 54 overs: Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. Williamson on strike - Jaddu goes quicker, width on offer and Williamson cuts it away for four. Just 4 off that over.

NZ 114/2 in 53 overs: Ashwin gets in three dots before Williamson punches one through covers for a couple. A single to end the over.

NZ 111/2 in 52 overs: Sharma continues. Latham defends the first two balls. Another maiden. How long before Latham and Williamson look to switch gears? They are content with the scoring rate at the moment.

NZ 111/2 in 51 overs: New Zealand needs 176 in 45 overs at almost four an over. Here's Ashwin. Latham on strike. He's still on 49. Latham brings up his 50 with a three. Well played.

= DRINKS =

NZ 108/2 in 50 overs: Ishant continues - Williamson defends towards extra-cover. He shoulders arms to a length delivery next. Williamson defends the next ball to covers (no ball given). Williamson completely unfazed at the moment. India need to find a way to get another wicket here. Dot to finish.

NZ 107/2 in 49 overs: Ashwin to Latham. He is on 49. Three dots from Ash. Beauty from Ashwin - flight close to off stump, and the ball dips and spins past the outside edge. Wraps up the over with a couple of dots. Maiden.

NZ 107/2 in 48 overs: Here's Ishant. India piling up the pressure with a series of dots. Can Ishant get the ball to reverse? Short mid-on in place, next to the pitch. Williamson times a drive through covers for four. Half volley and punished. Collects a two next ball. Dot to end the over.

NZ 101/2 in 47 overs: Ashwin continues. Round the wicket to Latham. He goes back and flicks one to square leg and 100 up for New Zealand in 46.3 overs.

NZ 99/2 in 46 overs: Another over for Umesh. Back to back maidens from Umesh as he keeps it in the channel on a good length to Williamson. New Zealand doesn't look to be eyeing a win here.

NZ 99/2 in 45 overs: Ashwin into the attack from the River End. Another maiden. The last ball completely beats Latham. It spins from just outside off and misses Latham's outside edge.

NZ 99/2 in 44 overs: Umesh strays on the legs and Williamson misses the flick. Desperate appeal from keeper Bharat for caught behind but Umesh is not interested. Maiden over from Umesh. Ishant is seen warming up on the sidelines.

NZ 99/2 in 43 overs: A late dab by Latham at backward point for a couple. He moves on to 48. Two runs from Axar's over.

NZ 97/2 in 42 overs: A single for Latham and Williamson. Decent pace from Umesh and on the stumps. Williamson solid in his defence.

NZ 95/2 in 41 overs: Axar continues. Latham punches at point for a couple as Axar offers some length. FOUR! Williamson skips down the wicket and takes it as a half-volley to deposit over the bowler. He keeps strike with a single off the last ball.

NZ 87/2 in 40 overs: Absolute beauty from Umesh to Williamson. Pitched on good length and shapes away a tiny bit to just miss the outside edge and the off stump. Very tight from Umesh. A probing off stump line pegs Williamson back.

NZ 86/2 in 39 overs: Axar continues. A single for Latham at cover and that's the only run from the other. Williamson continues to defend.

NZ 85/2 in 38 overs: Edged and four. Full and quick from Umesh and Latham edged it past slip on the cover drive. Full again last ball and Latham punches it straight for a couple.

NZ 80/2 in 37 overs: Axar from the other end. Maiden over as Williamson defends confidently with a forward stretch.

NZ 80/2 in 36 overs: Umesh will resume proceedings for India. OUT! Wicket first ball after Lunch and Somerville holes out to Gill at fine leg. What a start to the session! Williamson walks in at number 4. Pitched up on the stumps and Williamson defends. First run for the skipper with a single at backward point. Ishant is off the field again. Jags one back into Latham last ball and he leaves.

Players walk onto the field after Lunch and India will need to make quick inroads as New Zealand needs 205 runs to win with nine wickets remaining.

LIVE action from the post-lunch session begins shortly. Stay tuned!

- LUNCH BREAK - NZ 79/1 in 35 Overs

RECAP: Brilliant from Somerville and Latham. Not only did they survive the first session, they have also managed to score, rather easily, off the Indian bowlers. No demons on the pitch yet - the odd one has turned sharply but both NZ batters have exhibited sound defence and positive intent to keep their side in the hunt for a win. India need nine wickets in two sessions to deny NZ a win. New Zealand need another 205 from 60 overs. Be back shortly.

Two minutes to lunch. Should be the last over of this session. Here's Ashwin. Somerville on strike. He takes a single off the second ball. 2 byes to New Zealand as Ashwin generates sharp turn. The ball eludes the keeper and Rahane at slip. Encouraging signs for the Indian spinners. Two dots to end the over. That will be lunch.

NZ 76/1 in 34 overs: Umesh around the wicket to Latham. After two dots, Latham collects three thanks to a fumble from Jaddu at midwicket. Somerville on strike with a short leg - Umesh goes short and Somerville collects two courtesy an overthrow off the deflection at the striker's end. Single to end the over. 6 from it.

NZ 70/1 in 33 overs: Here's Ashwin. Can he snare a wicket here? Single to Latham first ball. Three fielders on the leg side catching and a slip for Somerville. Ash drops short, Somerville waits for it and puts it away for four. Dot to end the over.

NZ 65/1 in 32 overs: Umesh Yadav returns for a crack before the break. Latham on strike. Slip and a gully for him. After four successive dots, Latham works one off his legs for a single. Umesh ends the over with a bouncer; Somerville ducks.

NZ 64/1 in 31 overs: Ashwin replaces Jaddu. Latham on strike. First ball keeps low but Latham is up to the task and defends it. He gets a single next ball. No run to Somervile. A slip, leg gully, short leg, short mid-on and short midwicket for the right-hander. One off the over.

NZ 63/1 in 30 overs: Pujara and Rahane having a chat as batters change gloves. Pujara now goes up to Axar and has a word with him about the line he can bowl perhaps. Somerville on strike. Maiden from Axar. 20 minutes to lunch.

NZ 63/1 in 29 overs: Jadeja. After two dots, Latham sweeps one to deep backward square for a single. Somerville clips one behind square and gets off strike. Latham keeps out the last ball.

NZ 61/1 in 28 overs:India will be desperate for a wicket before lunch. Axar carries on. Latham gets off strike with a quick single. Axar Patel to Somerville - five dots.

NZ 60/1 in 27 overs: Jadeja. Single, dot, dot off the first three balls. Somerville has looked at ease against a quality spin attack. One run and five dots from that over.

NZ 59/1 in 26 overs: Axar to continue. Latham on strike. Slip and short leg. Fewer men catching for Axar. Latham flicks a full bag towards square leg for a single. A dot to end the over.

NZ 58/1 in 25 overs: Here's Jadeja. Latham on strike. Jaddu beats the outside edge with his second ball. Flighted ball, drew Latham forward. He played inside the line and missed. Jadeja is rushing through his overs as one would expect. Just a single from that over.

NZ 57/1 in 24 overs: Axar. A dot followed by a single to Latham. Somerville happy to work the ball in the gaps for a single. India would like a wicket here. This partnership hasn't given an inch so far. Three singles from the over.

NZ 54/1 in 23 overs: Jadeja over the wicket to Latham. He gets a single and gets off strike. Good over from Jaddu - only one from it.

NZ 53/1 in 22 overs: Axar Patel into the attack. Two dots to Somerville. Slip, gully and short leg in place. Credit to Somerville, who has been rock solid in defence. Tidy start for Axar - a maiden.

NZ 53/1 in 21 overs: Jadeja to continue. Two slips and a short leg for Somerville, who takes a single and brings up the 50 stand. A slip, leg-slip and short leg for left-handed Latham. Just a single from that over.

NZ 52/1 in 20 overs: Ishant to resume after the break. Starts with a dot. Somerville on strike. Second delivery by Ishant is a no ball. Follows it up with another dot. Single to Somerville off the third ball. Around the wicket to Latham and concedes a single. Both batters have rotated the strike well so far. A single to end the over.

- DRINKS -

NZ 48/1 in 19 overs: Here's Jadeja. Latham on strike. Latham sweeps one away for four. Slip, leg gully and short leg in place. Review for lbw against Latham. Given not out by on-field umpire. Impact outside off according to the replays. India lose a review. Sharp turn from outside off. Single to end the over. Somerville and Latham have survived a testing first hour. India a touch desperate for a breakthrough here.

NZ 42/1 in 18 overs: Appeal for LBW but turned down. Ishant came from round the wicket to Latham and beat him with one that came in from a good length. He got some wood on it before it thudded onto the front pad. Three runs from the over.

NZ 39/1 in 17 overs: Good over from Ashwin. Beats Somerville just outside off stump and almost beats him. Three runs from it.

NZ 36/1 in 16 overs: Somerville edges one again but short of Rahane at gully. A couple of singles from Ishant's over.

NZ 34/1 in 15 overs: Ashwin beats Latham on the sweep. Latham then goes for the reverse-sweep and almost hands it to silly point. A couple for Latham to end the over.

NZ 32/1 in 14 overs: Ishant with the ball. Somerville edges it between the slips and it runs away to the third man boundary. Somerville sees off the over with comfort.

NZ 28/1 in 13 overs: Latham plays out a maiden against Ashwin but continues to look at ease. By the looks of it so far, it is going to be a hard day's work for the spinners.

NZ 28/1 in 12 overs: Umesh beats Somerville by getting one to straighten just a tad bit from off stump.  A couple of lovely cuts past point get Somerville two boundaries. His strokeplay has looked like that of a top-order batter so far this morning. Ishant is back onto the field.

NZ 20/1 in 11 overs: Latham tucks one away to the leg side off the backfoot for a couple. He has looked comfortable so far in his defence against Ashwin.

NZ 18/1 in 10 overs: Umesh troubling the batters. Gets one to nip into Latham from a good length and beats him onto the pads before getting his bottom edge almost onto the stumps. Somerville edges one to first slip but it reaches him on the bounce.

NZ 17/1 in 9 overs: Somerville almost chops it on to his stumps as Ashwin changes angles and comes from round the wicket. Maiden over. Somervile looked solid in his defence until that final ball.

NZ 17/1 in 8 overs: FOUR! Too full and straight from Umesh and Somerville drives it straight to the boundary. It was in the air for a while but Umesh was still in his follow through and had no chance of getting to it. Beaten! Shapes away from Somerville's dead bat outside off. Edged to backward point for a single and Somerville will keep strike.

NZ 12/1 in 7 overs: That turns big down Somerville's leg and misses everything...two byes.

NZ 9/1 in 6 overs: Umesh from the other end. KS Bharat is behind the stumps as Saha continues to have issues with his neck. FOUR! Drifted onto Latham's pads from a middle stump line and he clips it fine to the boundary. Umesh maintains a wide-ish line outside off stump and Latham is happy to leave.

NZ 5/1 in 5 overs: Live action begins. Ashwin to Latham first ball. Drifted onto the pads and Latham gets a single first ball. Ishant is walking off the field as he seems to have jammed his finger into the ground while fielding. Suryakumar replaces him in the field.

DAY 4 RECAP

Shreyas Iyer’s “fairytale” became even more special on Sunday as he scored a responsible half-century to lead India’s fightback after a top-order collapse. He was ably supported by a fluid R. Ashwin and a grafting Wriddhiman Saha as India assumed control again by stumps on Day Four. New Zealand, at 4 for 1, now needs 280 more to win.

Will Young was unlucky to be dismissed minutes before the end of the day’s play. Ashwin’s turning ball stayed low and struck him on the pads and the ball, according to the ball-tracker, would have missed leg-stump. But he took more than 15 seconds to opt for the referral after the umpire had given him out.
