  • Stumps Day One - India 242 all out New Zealand 63/0

  • Well that will be stumps on Day one and once again India has let the advantage slip away. Three fifties from Shaw, Pujara and Vihari got them to 242 and in reply, New Zealand has made a solid start. The Indian bowlers couldn't separate the opening pair.

  • Ravindra Jadeja into the attack and he starts with a maiden.

  • Tom Latham is enjoying his stay in the middle as he creams Mohammed Shami for a couple of gorgeous boundaries. Shami is giving his all but Latham is up to the task.

  • Latham and Blundell have managed to blunt the Indian attack and they will look to carry their bat through. India's seamers have failed to penetrate and make a breakthrough. 5 overs remaining in the day.

  • India still struggling to get a breakthrough and they would ideally want a couple before close of play.

  • Lot of outside edges are flying past the slip cordon and both Bumrah and Umesh are sticking to a plan of bowling straight lines. They have managed to induce edges but both the New Zealand openers are playing with soft hands. Excellent cricket all round.

  • Excellent from Umesh Yadav as he induces an edge of Tom Lathan and the ball just dies ahead of a diving Virat Kohli. Probing line from the pacer.

  • Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are doing the ball let the talking as they are able to extract bounce and Umesh has swung it both ways. New Zealand openers are watchful as India look to make an early breakthrough.

  • Early wickets will be the key for India.

  • Tom Latham and Tom Blundell are out there in the middle and it will be Jasprit Bumrah with the new ball.

  • Kyle Jamieson: It's a special feeling (to get the maiden fifer). It's special to have the family here to witness this moment. We did well as a bowling unit. This venue has been comfortable for me with the run-ups and everything... nice to come back home. The pitch wasn't doing as much as Wellington, so to keep them to 242 was good.

  • Kyle Jamieson picks a five-wicket haul in his second Test outing as India folds out for 242. From 194/4 to 242 all out, India suffers yet another collapse. Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari made half-centuries but failed to get going. The shot selection was questionable and India lost wickets at crucial intervals. Post Tea, New Zealand stormed back with quick wickets to inflict a late collapse.

  • End of Innings: India 242 all out.

  • WICKET - Trent Boult comes back with a superb delivery to shatter the stumps as Shami and Bumrah sprint away.

  • SIX - Mohammed Shami is not backing away as he smokes Trent Boult for a huge maximum. Crucial runs for India.

  • Jasprit Bumrah, the last man walks in.

  • WICKET - Jamieson has a five-for in his second Test match as he bounces out Ravindra Jadeja. Short delivery, Jadeja goes for the pull and Trent Boult takes an excellent catch at fine leg. New Zealand are right back in this game.

  • WICKET - Jamieson has four as he removes Umesh Yadav for a duck. Nothing delivery and Umesh ends up poking at it and offers a simple catch to the keeper.

  • Umesh Yadav is the new man in.

  • WICKET - Rishabh Pant's luck runs out as Jamieson gets him. His toorid time at the crease comes to an end. Pant could have easily left alone the length delivery but goes fetching for it, gets an inside edge and the ball disturbs the timber. India has pressed the self-destruct button.

  • Rishabh Pant is living dangerously out there and Trent Boult had him almost twice in two balls. Two genuine chances went begging and the 200 comes up for India.

  • Ravindra Jadeja joins Rishabh Pant

  • WICKET - Just can't believe Pujara, of all, has played that shot! Yet another batsman getting the start but failing to convert.. Jamieson digs in short, Pujara could have easily evaded it but instead goes for the pull, gets a top edge and Watling settles under the skier.

  • Pant gets off the mark with a drive down the ground and that should ease some nerves.

  • Rishabh Pant walks out along with Pujara and India can't afford any further slip-ups.  Final session of the day is underway.

  • WICKET - Wagner wins the battle and Vihari has thrown away his wicket. There was this little battle that was going on between the duo and Vihari fails to keep his aggression under check and pays the price. Wagner digs in short, Vihari goes across and plays the pull, gets a glove and Wagner is ecstatic! India five down at Tea.

  • Vihari hits Fifty - Wagner offers width and Vihari slashes it hard, finds the boundary and that's a very well-made half-century. Needs to carry on though.

  • India is slowly building the momentum as Hanuma Vihari collects four boundaries and nears his half-century with a solid Cheteshwar Pujara in company. India will hope to enter the Tea break ithout aby further hiccups.

  • Fifty for Pujara - 25th half-century and this has been solid from Pujara. Took his time, got his eye in and then played his natural game. Drove wonderfully down the ground and most importantly left well. Need to carry his bat through today.

  • Kyle Jamieson is extracting good bounce and pace and a watchful Pujara is aware of his off-stump. Testing period and Pujara with a solid defence and good leaves is keeping the battle going.

  • Vihari survives - Again the same mistake what Rahane did. Vihari pushes hard at the ball with minimal feet movement, gets a thick outside edge but Watling spills it behind the stumps. Lucky Vihari!

  • Cheteshwar Pujara is slowly getting out of his shell and he is driving gloriously. His feet are moving and he has played some exquisite drives down the ground with a solid defence to backup. India needs him to score a big one.

  • Hanuma Vihari is the new man in. Opportunity for the young man to showcase his talent.

  • WICKET - Huge blow for India as Ajinkya Rahane departs. Tim Southee and New Zealand are all smiles as they know how important this wicket is. Southee gets one to shape away, Rahane goes hard at it, gets an outside edge and Ross Taylor swallows it with delight at first slip.

  • 100 up for India - Pujara gets into the groove as he brings up India's 100 with a spanking cover drive. Gorgeous when he gets going.

  • Rahane looked comfortable in the middle during the first Test and he is tailor made for these kind of situations. Can the India vice-captain produce a special innings? We will wait and watch.

  • Ajinkya Rahane is the new man in and this pair have a job in their hands.

  • WICKET - Huge wicket and it's the India skipper who has to depart. Tim Southee strikes immediately after Lunch and he has got the big fish! Kohli is trapped plumb and India loses its review. The Indian captain tries to flick an incoming delivery towards mid-on, misses it by a huge margin and the ball cannons on to his pads. India has lost both its reviews.

  • And that will be Lunch on Day one with India entering the break at 85/2. Virat Kohli will take that especially after what happened in the first Test. Mayank Agarwal departed early but it was Prithvi Shaw who got going by scoring his first overseas half-century. He missed out on an opportunity of scoring a big one, but nevertheless gave India the start. Pujara is yet to score freely.

  • The skipper is off the mark with a flick through the mid-wicket and pockets three runs.  Going to be a crucial partnership for India.

  • Skipper Virat Kohli joins Pujara.

  • WICKET - Shaw departs and it's pure lack of concentration, reckons VVS Laxman on air. And what an absolute stunner Tom Latham has taken in the slips. Full and wide, Shaw goes for a big, booming drive, gets a thick edge and Latham times his jump to perfection to pack off the youngster. An opportunity lost.

  • Shaw hits Fifty - Wonderful exhibition of batting as Shaw hits his first overseas fifty.

  • Fifty up for India - The fifty is up for the Indians and they will take it, given the fact that they lost the toss on a green top. A peach of a delivery removed Mayank but Shaw has been solid. Pujara in the process of getting his eye in.

  • Pujara opens his account with a slash through the covers and he would be relieved to get off the mark.

  • Trent Boult is bowling a beautiful line and Pujara is caught in his crease. Yet to open his account. Meanwhile, Shaw has shown great temperament and has collected five boundaries.

  • Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in.

  • WICKET - Trent Boult strikes and has trapped Mayank Agarwal. India lose the review. Full delivery, Agarwal goes for the flick, misses it and the ball thuds on to the pad. He consults with Shaw, takes the review but it's three reds. Agarwal departs and New Zealand have a breakthrough.

  • Excellent start by the Indian openers and they have been compact. Playing late and being solid while driving down the ground. No half measures approach. While Shaw has entered double digits, Mayank is yet to.

  • FOUR - India are underway and Shaw opens his account with a boundary. Solid, firm push through the backward point region and the ball races away.

  • Time Southee starts with a maiden and it's good to see Prithvi Shaw showing some positive intent, rather than trying to get on top of the bowler.

  • The Anthems are done and dusted and out walk Prithvi Shaw along with Mayank Agarwal. It will be Tim Southee who will start the proceedings with the new ball. Here we go!

  • Playing XI

India: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(C), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant(WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand: Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Kane Williamson(C), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling(WK), Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult

  • Virat Kohli: We would have bowled first. We are ready for doing the other thing, the difficult things in Tests, especially in conditions that are not your own. Umesh comes in for Ishant, Jadeja for Ashwin - gives us more with the bat, and his accuracy as well. As batsmen we need to figure out how to score runs. That's upto the individuals to score runs, and it's all about executing that out here. We aren't here to show that we can play in these conditions. We have done it before, and we just need to execute everything properly.

Kane Williamson: We'll have a bowl. Some similarities - the Basin has green tinge too. Wagner in for Ajaz Patel. We came here, looked at the surface, and its history and figured all-pace was the way to go. There should be pace and bounce, so there's opportunity to score as well.

  • New Zealand opts to bowl first against India on a green carpet.
  • Right then we are all set for the toss with both Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson out there in the middle.
  • Ok then, toss will happen at 04:15 AM and the sun is out. The Indians are going through their paces.
  • Going by the looks, it's really hard to make out the pitch as it's completely green out there in the middle.
  •
  • Good news as the covers are coming off and members of the Indian team are out there in the middle, going through light warm-ups.
  •
  • We are having a delayed start as there is a downpour at Christchurch, which means toss is delayed.
  • Stay tuned as we get you the toss update and team news.
  • Good morning readers... Early morning start and we are almost ready for the toss. Virat Kohli would hope he calls it right this time.

The Preview

Christchurch Test: Jolted India gears up to face relentless New Zealand

The Hagley Oval is flanked by lush green gardens that mirror the city’s serene and pleasant ambience.

However, things will not be remotely as peaceful for the Indians on a grass-laden surface as they strive to square the series in the second Test beginning Saturday.

Also at stake would be 60 points of the World Test championship. It’s a big game for both sides.

Ishant ruled out

The Test has not begun and India has already been hit by an injury blow. Ishant Sharma’s ankle injury - he had picked it up during the domestic Ranji season - has flared up again and the lanky paceman will miss the second Test.

The lanky Ishant was, by far, the best Indian bowler in the first Test and returned a five-wicket innings haul. Umesh Yadav, sharp but not as tall as Ishant, is expected to come in.

While Ishant relies on bounce and an off-stump line, Umesh, a handful with his pace, does damage with reverse swing. Umesh pitches the ball up and can bowl outswingers with the new ball.

The Indian batsmen will have to approach the Test with a fresh mindset. At Wellington, they appeared under a siege mentally.
