Shining in his new role as Test opener, Rohit Sharma completed 2,000 runs in Test cricket during the third and final Test against South Africa in Ranchi on Saturday.
The 32-year-old scored his third hundred of the series to reach the landmark figure. In a typical Virender Sehwag style, he brought up his century by smashing a six off Dane Piedt. He was batting on 95.
Before the Ranchi Test, Rohit was 98 runs away from the 2,000-run mark.
Playing in his 30th Test match, Rohit also registered his sixth Test century overall. From 39/3, he held the Indian innings along with statemate Ajinkya Rahane. The duo stitched a fourth-wicket partnership (152 runs and counting) to stage a rescue act.
Rohit took 86 balls to his fifty, but the next 50 runs came off just 48 deliveries.
At tea, he was unbeaten on 108 off 149 balls (13x4, 4x6). Giving him company is Rahane — 74 off 114 (10X4, 1x6) —and India is comfortably placed at 205/3.
