“Credit goes to India for playing outstandingly in the series. If we could have dragged the game to the fifth day, we could have learned something, but (after) losing within two and half days, you cannot give any excuses,” the Sri Lanka captain told reporters.

Batting failures and the absence of key players due to injuries, were the twin factors that Chandimal identified as the causes behind Sri Lanka’s debilitating loss.

“When you go to the middle, you have to put your plans into practice. The batters were unable to do that. The (other) concern is injuries. In the Australia series (which Sri Lanka won 3-0), everyone was fit. In this series, there were so many injuries starting from Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne. We have to perform better than this,” the home team’s skipper said.

Chandimal also gave due credit to Hardik Pandya and added: “At one point we thought as if we were playing in England. They (Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav) bowled so well and made the most of the conditions.”

Finally when a Sri Lankan journalist asked if he would apologise on behalf of the team, Chandimal replied: “Yes, I am apologising to all the Sri Lankan fans here and away from home.”
