NEW BATTER IN- PUNAM RAUT JOINS PUNIA IN THE MIDDLE.

Jemimah Rodrigues 55(65, 7x4) lbw b. Shangase

THE DEBUTANT MAKES INSTANT IMPACT AS SHE GETS SOUTH AFRICA THE MUCH-NEEDED BREAKTHROUGH BY DISMISSING JEMIMAH. In the previous delivery, Jemimah had cut a wide delivery off the back foot for a boundary. Shangase responded with a straight one and Jemimah was caught leg before wicket while attempting to sweep the ball.

OVERS- 20| INDIA 77-0| PUNIA 20(58), JEMIMAH 50(62)

FIFTY UP!!! JEMIMAH RODRIGUES BRINGS UP HER HALF-CENTURY IN 62 BALLS AT A STRIKE-RATE OF 80. Second of her career. Her partnership with Punia, which is now of 77, has put the women in blue into the driving seat.

OVERS- 18| INDIA 71-0| PUNIA 20(53), JEMIMAH 44(55)

Jemimah moves into the 40s and has done so with a healthy strike-rate.  She, along with Punia, has put India into a commanding position in this chase.

OVERS- 14| INDIA 57-0| PUNIA 14(41), JEMIMAH 36(43)

Jemimah hits two boundaries off Klerk's first over and is looking to get on with the chase. The required run-rate has further plundered and is currently of three run per over.

OVERS- 13| INDIA 48-0| PUNIA 14(41), JEMIMAH 27(37)

OVERS- 10| INDIA 35-0| PUNIA 12(29), JEMIMAH 16(31)

Punia scores her first boundary on the last ball off the tenth over. She edged it past the keeper as India has started well.

OVERS- 9| INDIA 31-0| PUNIA 8(23), JEMIMAH 16(31)

DROPPED!! KAPP, WHO USUALLY POSSESSES A SAFE PAIR OF HANDS, DROPS A SITTER AT SHORT MID-WICKET! Punia hit a Sekhukhune delivery straight to the fielder, but the ball popped out of her hands. South Africans haven't fielded well in the majority of the tour so far and cannot afford to miss such simple chances.

OVERS- 8| INDIA 28-0| PUNIA 6(15), JEMIMAH 16(17)

India is maintaining a healthy run-rate of four from the onset. Just a sole boundary has been hit so far, which makes this partnership all the more instrumental. It lays emphasis on the importance of rotating the strike.

OVERS- 5| INDIA 19-0| PUNIA 4(10), JEMIMAH 10(20)

India is off to a strong start here. A boundary and a three for Jemimah and five wide from Kapp has helped India's cause so far. Moreover, the Proteas have been a little in the field so far with a several misfields. It can't afford to gift runs away when the total is a very small one.

OVERS- 2| INDIA 8-0| PUNIA 2(2), JEMIMAH 6(10)

A tidy first over from Kapp, conceding just two runs.

GOOD FIRST OVER FOR INDIA. Priya punched the first ball of her international career to the offside off the backfoot and got off the mark with a single. Jemimah began her innings with a boundary through the mid-wicket region.

Two slips in position AND WE ARE OFF WITH THE SECOND INNINGS.

Shabnam Ismail with the new ball in hand and Punia to face the first ball.

Debutant Priya Punia comes out to open the innings with Jemimah Rodrigues.

-----------------START OF THE INDIAN INNINGS------------

STORY OF THE FIRST INNINGS:

Batters failing to convert the start into big ones and Indians bagging wickets at regular intervals forms the story of the first innings.

South Africa never really got going throughout the innings. The team was rocked by Jhulan Goswami's first-ball wicket of Lizelle Lee. Trisha Chetty hit some lovely boundaries, while Laura Wolvaardt contributed with occasional hits to then fence. Once Ekta Bisht was introduced, the pressure on Proteas mounted further. The bowler dismissed Trisha Chetty and Mignon du Preez in quick succession at a time when both the batters looked confident and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Then, the skipper walked in. The onus was on Sune Luus to repair the damage with Laura. However, the latter was undone by a peach of a delivery by Deepti, which turned in sharply and found the timber.

Shikha Pandey was reintroduced into the attack and she piled further misery on South Africa with her twin-strikes, removing Luus and Nadine de Klerk in the same over.

The only positive for the women in green was Marizanne Kapp, who toiled hard for a fifty. She was joined by Tumi Sekhukhune after Goswami and Poonam Yadav dismissed debutant Shangase and Shabnim Ismail, respectively. Sekhukhune and Kapp frustrated the Indian bowlers for a little under 13 overs and stitched up a crucial 30-wicket partnership to help South Africa to 164. Yadav sent Tumi packing and Goswami wrapped up the innings with Kapp's wicket. South Africa was bowled out in 45.1 overs.

------------------------------END OF THE FIRST INNINGS-----------------------------------

OVERS- 45.1| SOUTH AFRICA 164/10| , KHAKA 1(1)

KAPP 54(64, 6x4)) ct P. Raut b. Goswami

ALL-OUT!! JHULAN GOSWAMI PICKS UP HER THIRD WICKET AS KAPP'S COVER DRIVE FAILS TO CLEAR THE FIELDER AND IS CAUGHT BY PUNAM RAUT. THAT'S THE END OF FIRST INNINGS.

OVERS- 45| SOUTH AFRICA 164-9| KAPP 54(64), KHAKA 1(1)

FIFTY UP! KAPP BRINGS UP HER FIFTY IN JUST 62 BALLS. SHE HAS BEEN MADE TO WORK VERY HARD FOR THIS, BUT NONETHELESS, SHE GETS TO  A WELL-DESERVED HALF-CENTURY.

OVERS- 44.3| SOUTH AFRICA 158-9| KAPP 46(59), KHAKA

SEKHUKHUNE 6(33) ct Bisht b Yadav

SEKHUKHUNE'S RESISTANCE COMES TO AN END! ONCE AGAIN, IT'S POONAM YADAV'S GOOGLY THAT DOES THE TRICK. The bowler comes around the wicket to the left-hander, pitched the googly outside leg and found the edge. The ball hung in the air for a bit, but Bisht does well at slips to dive forward and grab the ball. PROTEAS NINE DOWN!

OVERS- 44| SOUTH AFRICA 155-8| KAPP 46(59), SEKHUKHUNE 6(33)

Tumi Sekhukhune is playing a brilliant innings here. She has held her end of the wicket and a sensible 33-ball six means Kapp is able to get the odd boundary and keep the scoreboard ticking. Last six overs to go.

OVERS- 40| SOUTH AFRICA 147-8| KAPP 42(51), SEKHUKHUNE 2(17)

END OF THE BATTING POWERPLAY AS KAPP MOVES INTO THE 40s. If the Proteas can negotiate the next ten overs, it can reach 175-180 with ease. Kapp needs to face most of the deliveries with an tail-ender at the other end. So far, she has done it well.

OVERS- 35| SOUTH AFRICA 130-8| KAPP 27(32), SEKHUKHUNE 0(6)

Just the one run from the Poonam Yadav over.

NEW BATTER IN- TUMI SEKHUKHUNE IS OUT TO BAT

OVERS- 32| SOUTH AFRICA 128-8| KAPP 25(29)

Shangase - 4(10, 1x4) ct Jemimah Rodrigues b Jhulan Goswami

EDGE AND GONE! Goswami picks up her second wicket. She tosses this delivery up outside off, enticing the batsman to drive at it. The balls finds the edge and is caught comfortably by the only slip fielder in Jemimah.

OVERS- 32| SOUTH AFRICA 121-7| KAPP 18 (23), SHANGASE 4(7)

Shangase scores her first international runs with a boundary. Goswami pitches it short and Shangase tries to pull the ball. The ball flies off the top edge and into the fence.

NEW BATTER IN- DEBUTANT NONDUMISO SHANGASE WALKS OUT.

OVERS- 27| SOUTH AFRICA 115-7| KAPP 16 (18),

ISMAIL 3 (21) ct. Bhatia b. Poonam Yadav

Poonam Yadav picks up her first wicket, Ismail edges the googly to keeper Bhatia, who shows quick reflexes to grab a rising ball.

NEW BATTER IN- SHABNIM ISMAIL JOINS KAPP IN THE MIDDLE.

OVERS- 27| SOUTH AFRICA 110-6| KAPP 14 (6), ISMAIL 1(5)

Shabnam cuts one through point to get off the mark. South Africa is in deep waters here. It has lost three quick wickets and it will be interesting to see if the batters are able to play out all 50 overs.

OUT FOR A DUCK! Shikha Pandey strikes twice in the same over, her latest scalp being Nadine de Klerk. Pandey pitches it up and de Klerk takes a huge stride forward. However, she is late on the ball and she caught leg before wicket. THAT WAS PLUMB!

NEW BATTER IN- NADINE DE KLERK

SUNE LUSS- 22 (43, 3x4) ct & b Shikha Pandey

SOFT DISMISSAL AND THE SKIPPER HAS TO WALK TO THE PAVILION! Pandey's good length delivery in the middle and leg region just holds up and catches Luus by surprise. The batter tries to play it down to mid-wicket, but ends up chipping it right back to the bowler. Pandey picks up her first wicket

OVERS- 24| SOUTH AFRICA 99-4| Luus- 18(39), KAPP 8 (8)

EIGHT RUNS OFF THE OVER! Kapp hit Deepti Sharma for a boundary between log on and mid-wicket and that was a good over for the South Africans.

NEW BATTER IN- SKIPPER SUNE LUUS IS JOINED BY MARIZANNE KAPP.

OVERS - 22| SOUTH AFRICA 89-4| LUUS- 16 (34), KAPP 0 (0)

Wolvaardt has been castled by Deepti Sharma; tossed up delivery outside off, spins back in and goes through the gate to crash into the stumps.

OVERS- 17| SOUTH AFRICA 75-3| Wolvaardt- 35(55), Luus- 7(13)

Wolvaardt and Luus look comfortable at the crease. Their partnership is now worth 19 runs.

OVERS- 14| SOUTH AFRICA 61-3| Wolvaardt- 27(43), Luus- 1(7)

Wolvaardt and Luus have a lot of repair work to do here. The onus is on them to bail the team out of deep water in the first innings.

NEW BATTER IN- SKIPPER SUNE LUUS JOINS WOLVAARDT IN THE CENTRE.

OVERS- 11.4| SOUTH AFRICA 56-3| Wolvaardt- 24(37)

FOXED HER! EKTA BISHT GETS HER REVENGE AND DOES IT IN STYLE! After being hit for two boundaries in the same over, Bisht still decided to float the ball up. She got a lot of grip and turn away from the batsman, who was seemingly caught confused between staying put and stepping out. Mignon ended up a few inches outside the crease and that gave the keeper enough time to disturb the timber!

Mignon du Preez- 16 (15, 4x4) st. Bhatia b. Bisht

OVERS- 11.3| SOUTH AFRICA 56-2| Wolvaardt- 24(37), du Preez- 16(15)

UP AND OVER! Mignon du Preez is using her feet against the spinners extremely well here. After hitting Deepti Sharma for a boundary in the previous over with a reverse sweep, she hit Ekta Bisht for two boundaries down the ground.

OVERS- 8 | SOUTH AFRICA 36-2| Wolvaardt- 16(28), du Preez- 4(3)

NEW BATTER IN- MIGNON DU PREEZ walks into the middle and she starts positively. She converts the second ball she faces into a full-toss, advances down the track and hits it right past the bowler for four. She almost takes out Wolvaardt in the process, but the batter was able to get out of harm's way without a problem.

Chetty- 14 (17, 2x4) st. Bhatia b. Bisht

STUMPED AND THAT'S WICKET NO. 2 FOR INDIA! That was very good work from the wicket-keeper Taniya Bhatiya. Bisht flights this ball up nicely and entices Chetty to play the sweep. The ball spins away from her and Bhatiya is quick to collect and dislodge the bails. The replay shows that Chetty faills to drag her feet back on time and she has to go!

OVERS- 7 | SOUTH AFRICA 31-1| Wolvaardt- 15(26), Chetty- 14(15)

HALF CHANCE THERE! On the second delivery of the over, Chetty hits a full one from Goswami right past the her and there was a half caught and bowled opportunity. The bowler fails to get low on time as the ball races to the bounday. Three balls later, Goswami's inswinging delivery on middle and off is lofted for a boundary over mid-wicket by Chetty. First boundaries for Chetty.

OVERS- 5 | SOUTH AFRICA 17-1| Wolvaardt- 11(21), Chetty- 5(8)

LOVELY TIMING AND PLACEMENT! Goswami pitched it slightly short and with the ball swinging away, Wolvaardt's bottom hand came into play as she drove the ball through the gap for four more. That's the second boundary of the day and for her.

OVERS- 3 | SOUTH AFRICA 9-1| Wolvaardt- 7(14), Chetty- 2(3)

JUST OUT OF REACH! Goswami swings the first ball of her second over away from the Chetty, who tries to drive it up on the up. She ends up edging the ball, which flies to the right of the second slip fielder. Jemimah Rodrigues puts in full-stretch dive and cannot hold on. The fielder in the deep saves the boundary with a dive and just a single is conceded.

OVERS- 2 | SOUTH AFRICA 8-1| Wolvaardt- 7(9), Chetty- 1(2)

DRIVEN FOR FOUR! Laura drives a half volley outside off from the other opening bowler, Shikha Pandey, and we have the first boundary of the day.

OVERS- 1 | SOUTH AFRICA 2-1| Wolvaardt- 1(3), Chetty- 1(2)

EDGE AND SAFE! Laura Wolvaardt nicks a ball through the slips to the third man as the first over comes to an end. Both batters are off the mark.

NEW BATTER IN- Wicketkeeper-batsman Trisha Chetty comes in to bat. She gets off the mark with a single on the second ball. The ball swings in sharply and she plays it down the fine leg.

OVERS- 0.1 | SOUTH AFRICA 0-1| Lee 0 (1) lbw. Goswami

THAT'S OUT! JHULAN GOSWAMI STARTS WITH A WICKET ON VERY HER FIRST BALL AND LEE IS IN UTTER DISBELIEF!  The ball pitched just outside off stump and the ball swings in sharply. The batsman does not offer a shot as the ball hits the back leg. UMPIRE RAISES HIS FINGER AND SHE IS GONE! WHAT A START FOR INDIA.

Umpire signals play and HERE WE GO!

JHULAN GOSWAMI TO LIZELLE LEE, with point, cover and two slips in place.

Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt have come to open the batting for South Africa.

TEAM NEWS: 23-YEAR-OLD PRIYA PUNIA MAKES HER ODI DEBUT.

For South Africa, Nondumiso Shangase makes her ODI debut.

HEAD TO HEAD IN ODIs: INDIA LEADS SOUTH AFRICA 11-7, while one game did not yield any result.

LAST FIVE MATCHES HEAD TO HEAD: INDIA HAS WON THREE, WHILE SOUTH AFRICA HAS WON TWO.

PREVIEW:

Having recorded a comfortable 3-1 win in the T20I leg a few days ago, India wears a confident look heading into the three-match women’s  ODI  series against South Africa here. The home team, however, has to deal with a big injury concern.

Elegant opening batter  Smriti Mandhana  is out for the first ODI — at a minimum — after  suffering a toe fracture during training . The full extent of the injury and layoff period will become clear only after a full assessment is done at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

“Smriti needs to get an MRI. She still has some swelling, which has to subside before an MRI can be done. It is difficult to put a timeline [on her possible return],” India head coach W. V. Raman said here on Tuesday.

Smriti made only 46 runs in the four T20Is earlier, but her compact top-order presence in 50-over cricket — her preferred format — will be missed. Smriti’s absence is likely to result in an ODI debut for 23-year-old Priya Punia. “Priya has scored consistently in domestic circuit. This is her chance,” captain  Mithali Raj  said.

Terrific ODI form

Mithali, meanwhile, wears the national jersey for the first time since announcing her retirement from T20Is. The skipper will hope to build on her terrific ODI form, which has seen her score at an average of 105.25 in her last nine knocks (dating back to April 2018).

South Africa, meanwhile, can take heart from the resounding 105-run win notched up in the fifth and final T20I. Openers Lizelle Lee (84, 47b) and Sune Luus (62, 56b) came good in great style, lifting the spirit of a struggling side. The arrival of experienced players Marizanne Kapp and Trisha Chetty to the ODI squad serves as another boost.

International women’s cricket returns to  Reliance  Stadium, nearly 18 months after big crowds created an exciting atmosphere for the India-Australia ODI series. Baroda Cricket Association officials are hopeful of large turnouts once again. Entry is free.
