After Australia media attacked the Indian team, especially the skipper, by drawing parallels between Virat Kohli and US President Donald Trump the Indian Twitterati reacted strongly to the story by news outlet Daily Telegraph .
Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, a known huge fan of Indian cricket, led the response by Tweeting: “Aussi media calls Virat, Donald Trump of sports !! ... thank you Aussi media for accepting that he is a winner and the PRESIDENT !!.”
Noted cricket columnist Ayaz Memon shared the Daily Telegraph ’s article, written by Ben Horne, and expressed his bemusement. “ @imVkohli like Trump ? Bizarre, over-the-top stuff:” he tweeted.
Other users shared their amusement of Australia ironically lecturing about the spirit of the game, referencing the infamous Sydney 2008 Test match. Twitter user @Sarcasticdudee posted: “Australian media says " Virat Kohli has become the Donald Trump of world sport " I guess they forgot 2008 Sydney Test.”
For the uninitiated, the Test between Australia and India, at the SCG in 2008, was clouded by complaints of bad umpiring and gamesmanship.
It also saw relations between the two Test playing nations hit an all-time low when Harbhajan Singh was banned for three Tests for using an alleged racial slur against Andrew Symonds. Harbhajan’s ban was later reduced to one Test upon appeal.
