M. S. K. Prasad: Huge responsibility, I will do my best

The Guntur-born Prasad played as a wicketkeeper-batsman in six Tests and 17 One-Day Internationals for India between 1999 and 2000. The Andhra player’s elevation creates a bit of history as he is the first cricketer from the region to take over as a senior national selector.

Former Indian wicketkeeper M. S. K. Prasad, who has replaced Roger Binny as the senior national selector from the South Zone, is ready for the challenge. “It is a huge responsibility and also a new challenge. I will do my best and I thank Andhra Cricket Association for backing my cause,” Prasad told Sportstar.

The Guntur-born Prasad played as a wicketkeeper-batsman in six Tests and 17 One-Day Internationals for India between 1999 and 2000.

The Andhra player’s elevation creates a bit of history as he is the first cricketer from the region to take over as a senior national selector. Earlier, two former Ranji Trophy skippers – D. V. Meher Baba and V. Chamudeswaranath have played their part as members of the BCCI’s junior selection committees.

During Meher Baba’s reign as a junior national selector, talented players like Rahul Dravid and V. V. S.Laxman played for junior India in the late eighties. Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu made it to the junior side during Chamundi’s regime.

Prasad resigns

To avoid the clause of conflict of interest, Prasad has also submitted his resignation as the Cricketing Operations Director of Andhra Pradesh. According to reliable sources, ACA is all set to rope in former National Cricket Academy director Kinjal Suratwala, who is the mentor of the Andhra Ranji Trophy team for the last two seasons, as a replacement for Prasad. He was the head of the sports science and coach education at NCA in Bangalore.

Dr. Kinjal was instrumental in running courses for coaches with Frank Tyson, the former English fast bowler, besides conducting several education programmes for physiotherapists and fitness trainers in the country. His workshops on ‘mental toughness training for cricketers’ are extremely popular among players all over the country.
