Gujarat is set to be the home of the world's largest cricket stadium with capacity of 1.1 lakh in Ahmedabad, with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) having started work on building the new stadium.

The stadium in Ahmedabad has been designed by world renowned architect firm M/s Populous, which also designed Melbourne cricket stadium — the current largest with 90,000 seating capacity. The new GCA stadium will be completed in two years and will then surpass Melbourne as the largest cricket stadium in the world.

The stadium will be spread in 63 acre land in Motera where the existing stadium has been demolished to start building new stadium, a sports club and other facilities.

"There will be a concourse to connect the entire stadium for pedestrian and vehicular movement. Moreover, the club house will be equipped with 55 rooms and an Olympic size swimming pool," said vice-president of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), Parimal Nathwani.

Mr Nathwani and joint secretary of the association, Jay Shah, son of national BJP President Amit Shah — who is also president of GCA — performed the ground breaking ceremony for the new stadium on Monday.

The new stadium and other facilities will be constructed with cost of Rs 700 crore and the construction award has been given to the country's largest engineering firm L&T .

The stadium will also boast of a state of the art club facility with three practice grounds and an indoor cricket academy for budding cricketers.

"The parking area will accommodate 3,000 cars and 10,000 two wheelers and traffic will be segregated in three directions," Nathwani said while sharing details of the new project.

According to him, the landmark stadium will have 76 corporate boxes and there will not be any column construction due to which there will not be any obstruction in match viewing from any corner of the stadium.
