"To be playing international cricket again, or be in the squad anyway, is pretty surreal, " New Zealand batsman Neil Broom said.

Neil Broom is delighted with a "surreal" recall to the New Zealand squad for the one-day international series against Bangladesh after three years out of the Black Caps set-up.

Batsman Broom's last international appearance came in a Twenty20 defeat against Sri Lanka in November 2013, while his previous ODI outing was all the way back in March 2010.

But the 33-year-old will return to the fold, along with Luke Ronchi, in the three-match series which begins on December 26.

"It came straight out of the blue. [Coach] Mike [Hesson] asked if I was keen to play for New Zealand again and I said I was keen as mustard," Broom is quoted as saying by Stuff.co.nz . "I'm pretty pumped about it. I thought my New Zealand dreams were over when I signed for Derby. To be playing international cricket again, or be in the squad anyway, is pretty surreal."

B. J. Watling, Henry Nicholls and Todd Astle are the omissions from the 3-0 whitewash in the recent Chappell-Hadlee tour to Australia.

New Zealand's 13-man ODI squad: Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Neil Broom, Lockie Ferguson, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee.
