Peter Handscomb scored his maiden Test century, but credited Australia's bowling attack for putting them in command against Pakistan on day two at the Gabba.

Handscomb, making just his second appearance in the longest format, added 41 to his overnight total of 61 as Australia put on 429 before being bowled out in its first innings.

Pakistan was dismal when batting under the floodlights in Brisbane, though, losing seven wickets for just 24 runs as they reached stumps trailing by 332 runs on 97 for 8.

Handscomb praised the efforts of Australia's quicks, in particular Josh Hazlewood (3 for 19 from 11 overs), for making such an influential impact on the first Test.

"The feeling [of scoring a century] has been pretty awesome. I haven't had too long to sit back and enjoy it yet, but I'll probably do it tonight," Handscomb told a media conference.

"I think that a lot of credit goes to our bowlers. It is tough under lights and we know the pink ball swings under lights, but credit goes to our bowlers and how we bowled in that session to get a little bit more out of the wicket. That's put us in a great position.

"[Hazlewood's pink-ball bowling was] definitely up there [with the best]. He's able to land it on a five-cent coin pretty much every time now and he's been doing that for plenty of games. He's doing a great job and he's awesome, it's great to have him on my team."

"I'd been toying with the idea of trying to hit Yasir over the top for most of the game to be fair and they brought the field up to try and keep me off strike, so I thought there was a chance [for a maximum] if he tosses it up," he continued.

"That was only meant to go for two bounces and trickle over the rope but it was lucky it went the full distance and I was able to capitalise on a wide one next over.

"I'm feeling pretty good. Movements are great and just trying to stay as clear as possible. We all know cricket is a pretty fickle game and it can all change quickly, so I'll be doing as much as I can to ensure I stay as positive and keep scoring as many runs as I can."
