Dhammika Prasad will undergo a precautionary scan on his shoulder after struggling during Sri Lanka's tour match with Essex.

Dhammika Prasad will undergo a precautionary scan on his shoulder after struggling during Sri Lanka's tour match with Essex.

The seamer was unable to complete his 18th over on Monday evening and left the field in discomfort due to shoulder pain.

Having been assessed overnight by the Sri Lanka medical team, Prasad will be sent for further scans to assess his fitness ahead of the first Test with England on May 19.

A Sri Lanka Cricket Board statement read: "Sri Lankan fast bowler Dhammika Prasad, who went off-field during the final session of play last evening (9th) due to a sore shoulder, has been attended to by team medical staff headed by Physio Steve Mount, and will undergo a precautionary scan this afternoon to ascertain injury, if any."

Having been bowled out for 254 on the opening day of their match at Chelmsford, Sri Lanka toiled in the field as Essex piled on the runs to declare 412-4, a lead of 158.

In reply Sri Lanka were 42-2 when rain washed out the final day's play and the match was declared a draw.

The first match of a three-Test series with England begins at Headingley, before matches at Chester-le-Street and Lord's.
