Shaminda Eranga has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after the Sri Lanka quick's action was deemed to be illegal.

Eranga was reported for a suspect action following the nine-wicket defeat against England in the second Test at Chester-le-Street last month.

The 29-year-old underwent testing at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough on June 6 and the International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed on Sunday that he failed an independent assessment.

Eranga took 1-34 in a one-day international victory against Ireland on Thursday, but did not bowl in the win over the same opponent on Saturday.

He claimed figures of 1-94 and 3-58 in the drawn third Test at Lord's, but will not be permitted to bowl in the first of five ODIs against England at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

Eranga, who can apply for re-assessment, has played in 19 Tests and as many ODIs as well as three Twenty20 internationals.
