Guptill retired hurt at the start of the third over in >New Zealand's run chase in the final ODI , a pursuit it comfortably completed by eight wickets to complete a 3-0 whitewash.

Having been set 237 to win in Nelson, Guptill was only at the crease for a couple of overs before returning to the dressing room, the 30-year-old pulling his muscle scampering for a single off Mashrafe Mortaza.

Guptill tried to continue following treatment but later in the over he pulled up again and was forced to retire.

In his absence, Kane Williamson (95 not out) and Neil Broom (97) starred as the Black Caps cruised home with 52 balls remaining, the pair sharing a stand of 179.

Broom's impressive ODI campaign - in which he led the batting charts with 228 runs at an average of 114 - means he has been given the nod to replace Guptill in the T20 squad.

"Martin's obviously a key player for us with the white ball so to lose him is disappointing," coach Mike Hesson is quoted as saying by the New Zealand Herald.

"We're confident with some rest, followed by a couple of domestic games [in the Ford Trophy], he'll be ready to play a big role against Australia.

"We needed to replace an attacking opening batsman and with Neil's experience opening [in the past] in the T20 format and his current form [it meant] he was a ready-made replacement."

The opening game in the three-match series begins in Napier on January 3 before a double header in Mount Maunganui.
