Victoria wicketkeeper Sam Harper has been cleared of serious injury after he was struck on the head by a bat during his team's Sheffield Shield fixture against South Australia.

Harper, 20, was standing up to the stumps to spinner Jon Holland on Saturday when he was accidentally struck by South Australia batsman Jake Lehmann's follow-through.

Although Harper was wearing a helmet, the blow resulted in him being taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

A subsequent statement from Cricket Victoria read: "Harper underwent scans this afternoon which have not identified any bleeding or bone damage, but he will remain in hospital overnight for observation."

Last month, Australia international Peter Nevill suffered a jaw injury when he was struck by a flying bat during a Big Bash League fixture. Nevill has since returned to action, scoring centuries in successive Sheffield Shield fixtures.
