After quitting captaincy a couple of days, Gautam Gambhir was dropped from the playing eleven as Delhi Daredevils took on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Friday.
Daredevils’ new captain, Shreyas Iyer, announced that Gambhir was replaced by Tamil Nadu batsman Vijay Shankar.
On Wednesday, Gambhir — following a series of defeats — decided to quit the responsibility, passing the baton to a rather young Iyer. “The new captain must be given some time,” Gambhir had justified.
But with the team management dropping the erstwhile captain from the playing eleven, eyebrows would be raised. Despite starting the tournament with a half-century, Gambhir hasn’t really been able to convert the starts.
After spending seven seasons at Kolkata Knight Riders, Gambhir had shifted allegiance to Daredevils this time around, hoping to make his presence felt. But the script changed quickly, as Delhi failed to hit the winning road in the tournament.
Being dropped from the side in a crucial match — against his former team — it would be interesting to see where lies Gambhir’s IPL future.
