Harbhajan Singh in action during an IPL game for Chennai Super Kings this season.

It was an odd happening that Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not deem it fit to deploy Harbhajan Singh as a bowler in the qualifier 1 play off match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. Left arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was used though and he choked the supply of runs for the Hyderabad side with a spell of 4-0-13-1.

It was not the first time though that Harbhajan was not seen in action as a bowler in an IPL match; he has so far played 149; 136 for MI and 13 for CSK.

In the third season (2010) of the league, Harbhajan had to retire (hurt) after scoring eight runs against Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne Stadium and skipper Sachin Tendulkar could not use him as a bowler. MI won this match by four runs.

Then in 2012, he himself was the captain against the Delhi Daredevils played at the Wankhede Stadium. He made 33 in MI’s total of 92 and he used Munaf Patel, R.P. Singh, Clint McKay, Pragyan Ojha and Kieron Pollard who together sent down 14.5 overs in a match that MI lost by seven wickets.
