Kings XI Punjab has named Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell as its new captain for the upcoming IPL season.
Maxwell will replace Indian batsman Murali Vijay, who led the team after David Miller was relieved of his duties midway through last season.
Maxwell lit up the IPL in 2014, but has shown inconsistent form since.
He will also become the third Australian skipper in the cash-rich league, after Steve Smith (RPSG) and David Warner (SRH).
The moves comes as a bit of a surprise, considering Maxwell’s lack of experience and also the presence of England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan and two-time T20World Cup winning captain Darren Sammy.
It will be interesting to see the kind of approach Maxwell adopts, and also the impact it has on the Kings XI team.
Kings XI might not have the strongest of the squads, but the franchise owners will be hoping Maxwell improves on last-year’s performance where the team finished at the bottom of the table.
