Ambati Rayudu and M. S. Dhoni steered Chennai Super Kings to a competitive 131 for four after it had been reduced to 65 for four in the 13th over. Dhoni injected fresh impetus to the CSK innings when he walked in to bat at the fall of Murali Vijay's wicket, first hitting a six off off-spinner Jayant Yadav before lofting Lasith Malinga for back-to-back sixes over long-on in the 19th over of the innings. Rayudu rotated strike and found the boundary at crucial moments, thereby scoring his runs at more than a run-a-ball and helping CSK up the ante towards the end of the innings.

Suryakumar Yadav played the defining innings to guide Mumbai Indians to a six-wicket win in the first qualifier of IPL 2019 with an unbeaten 54-ball 71 against Chennai Super Kings at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. His innings was laced with 10 fours. He had a couple of reprieves, with Murali Vijay dropping him at mid-on when he was batting on 11, while Shane Watson dropped a tougher chance at first slip off Ravindra Jadeja when Suryakumar was on 53. Suryakumar bagged the man-of-the-match award for his unbeaten knock.

Rahul Chahar took two for 14 in his four overs to help Mumbai Indians restrict Chennai Super Kings to 131 for four after Rohit Sharma won the toss and inserted CSK in to bat. Chahar dismissed Faf du Plessis off the first ball of his spell, having the South African captain caught behind square on the offside, before having Murali Vijay stumped with another sharp leg-spinner. Both the wickets came at critical junctures of the CSK innings.

Harbhajan Singh gave Chennai Super Kings a chance of clawing its way back into the match by dismissing Quinton de Kock for 8 in the fourth over of the Mumbai Indians innings, with just 21 runs on the board. With de Kock trying to give himself room to lift the ball over the infield on the offside, Harbhajan got the ball to drift into the left-hander, who was unable to get the right contact to play the shot he wanted to. He got the inside-half of his bat and, having tried to hit the ball more over the cover region, ended up spooning it to Faf du Plessis at long-off. At 21 for two, CSK had a big chance of piling on the pressure on MI, which, however, recovered through the partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who made a 31-ball 28.

Deepak Chahar got the second delivery of the Mumbai Indians to straighten after pitching on middle and leg stump, thereby opening up Rohit Sharma, beating the outside edge of his bat and hitting him on the back pad. Umpire Nitin Menon made an instant decision, ruling Rohit out, but the Mumbai skipper reviewed the umpire's decision, which stood after the ball-tracker showed the ball to be clipping the bails and DRS returned umpire's call.
