After four long years, Paddy Upton has reunited with the Rajasthan Royals as the head coach for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.

The South African mental conditioning coach, who had played a similar role at Royals from 2013 to 2015, has been brought in for the position, which was vacant last season.

As Royals returned to the IPL last year, following a two-year ban, former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne had played the role of a part-time mentor, guiding Royals to the knock-outs.

Sportstar understands that Warne is likely to be associated with the franchise this year as well, but his role is yet to be defined.

Upton will lead Royals’ central coaching group along with former Derbyshire quick, Stefan Jones, who will be the fast bowling coach, and Zubin Bharucha.

“It gives us immense pleasure to announce Paddy joining the team. We welcome him back to the Royals Family. Paddy is someone who is well versed with the culture of Rajasthan Royals and he knows what it takes to achieve success in international sport at the highest level.

"We cannot wait for the season to begin and are so pleased that the BCCI have confirmed it will be held entirely in India,” Manoj Badale, lead owner of Rajasthan Royals, said.

“The experience and knowledge that he brings to the table are unparalleled. As a coach, mentor and scientific trainer, Paddy Upton is well versed with the rigours of modern day sport. We are thrilled to have him back in our team and can’t wait to put on our pads and get going in the new season,” said Zubin Bharucha, head of Cricket, Rajasthan Royals.

Sairaj Bahutule, Amol Muzumdar and Dishant Yagnik will continue to be part of the coaching staff.
