In the first match of the day, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli played the anchor knock, an unbeaten 100, to lead his team to a challenging 180 for 2.
En route to his century, he developed a leg trouble, but in his own words, 'the other muscles took over'.
Kohli reached his 100 in the final over of the innings. It was his first IPL century. He had taken 23 balls to get from 50 to 100.
Dwayne Smith, opening the innings for Gujarat Lions instead of Aaron Finch, played an attacking hand of 32.
Brendon McCullum, the other opener, scored 42 off 24 balls, as Lions received a solid base for its successful chase.
Dinesh Karthik's half-century was also crucial in Lions' win.
In the other game of the day, Rising Pune Supergiants posted 160 for 5 in its innings, led by Ajinkya Rahane's 67 off 52 balls.
M. S. Dhoni, the Supergiants captain, added finishing touches to the innings, at No. 6, hitting 23 off 12 balls.
Suryakumar Yadav laid the anchor for Kolkata Knight Riders, with 60 off 49 balls.
