Hello and welcome to the highlights of IPL 2021, Match 2 between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. This was Santadeep Dey bringing you all the action as it unfurled at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

[ CSK vs DC, IPL 2021, MATCH 2 LIVE SCORECARD ]

HIGHLIGHTS

Shikhar Dhawan, Man of the Match:  I really enjoyed my batting. Prithvi was batting well as well. He carried on with his form from Vijay Hazare. It was important to get off to a good start because we were chasing a big total.

Rishabh Pant:  In the middle phase, I was under some pressure. But we did well towards the end. It was very special walking out for the toss with MS. He has been my go to man. I have learnt a lot from him.

We were thinking as to what we will do without Nortje and Rabada and I thought we had to do with the options we have. Prithvi and Shikhar did well for us. They kept it simple and looked for boundaries.

Prithvi Shaw:  Feeling good. Everyone contributed. The wicket was good to bat on in the second innings and we executed quite well. From Australia, when I was dropped, I was working from there itself, coming back and across early, so I practised before going to Vijay Hazare with Pravin Amre and worked on that.

I had a good plan before going into that tournament, so it is working quite well. I don't want to think about it (being dropped from the Indian side) because it was a disappointing moment for me but I have to move on and if something is wrong with my batting or technique, I have to improve and I am working hard on myself.

MS Dhoni:  A lot depended on the dew, and that factor played on our mind from the start and that's why we wanted to get as many runs as possible. The batters did a good job to reach 188, because it was tacky until dew settled in 50 minutes later.

We could have bowled slightly better, and if batters are hitting you over the fields, that's fair enough. The execution of the bowlers was poor and there were boundary balls that they bowled, but the bowlers will have learned and they will apply that in the future games.

DC INNINGS

DC 190/3 in 18.4 overs: Poor delivery from Shardul - strays down leg, Stoinis picks it on the full and flicks it to the fence. After a wayward knuckle ball, Shardul gets rid of Stoinis who gifts Sam the easiest of takes at deep midwicket.

However, that does little to shake DC nerves as Pant takes it upon himself to seal this season's first win with a boundary towards long-on.

DC 182/2 in 18 overs: Stoinis has muscled a fuller delivery from Bravo through long-off. Even Bravo could not help but appreciate the full-blooded stroke. 7 required off 12.

DC 172/2 in 17 overs: 600th boundary for Dhawan in the IPL! Creamed right through covers just wide of a diving Rayudu. 601st is in too. Shuffles across to his left and whips this towards deep backward square leg. WICKET! Dhawan's been caught stone dead in front of the sticks. Stoinis is the new man in. He signs up for the party too with a boundary off the second ball he faces.

DC 158/1 in 16 overs: Pristine placement! With the full toss on offer, you didn't think Dhawan would have let this go, did you? Four. The last timeout of the day, in the meantime, is upon us. The equation stands at 31 runs off 24 balls now.

DC 151/1 in 15 overs: Dhawan moves across the stumps during Chahar's loadup and dispatches him to the fence off his first ball. And Pant gets his first runs... had to be a boundary. Scythed hard towards deep backward point.

DC 139/1 in 14 overs: Dhawan survives a close call - in by just a frame! Dhoni, alive to the situation as always, picks up the ball in no time and dislodges the bails with a pin-point throw. And finally! An exciting innings from Shaw comes to an end as Bravo lures the batter with a slower and wider delivery. Shaw tries to go big but ends up holing out to Moeen. Pant has promoted himself up the order. Should come as no surprise at all.

DC 136/0 in 13 overs: The bowlers are clearly under huge pressure, made all the more evident by Moeen as the ball slips out of his hand to sail over the batter and into Dhoni's gloves. A no-ball is called. The carnage, meanwhile, continues as Shaw picks up a six followed by a four. Delhi needs 53 runs in 42 balls.

DC 121/0 in 12 overs: The runs continue to come thick and fast for Delhi. Bravo, bowling his first over, concedes a boundary off his second delivery as well. The Trinidadian takes a hard blow to his right hand as well as Dhawan looks to hit one straight down the ground but looks like he is okay to carry on.

DC 113/0 in 11 overs: Dhawan reaches his fifty now off 35 deliveries moments after Delhi enters triple digits. DC might as well start celebrating back in the dugout. Shaw's pummelled Shardul to pick up four more. Oh dear, Dhawan scores another four to end the over with a flourish.

DC 99/0 in 10 overs: Dhawan wants a piece of the pie as well. Shimmies down the pitch, makes ample room and dispatches it out of the park quite comfortably. Spilled AGAIN! Shaw gets another lifeline as Gaikwad lets one burst through his fingers. A tough opportunity, that, but these chances need to be converted. Shaw brings up his 7th IPL fifty immediately after with a boundary to add insult to injury.

DC 86/0 in 9 overs: Jadeja to continue. Dhawan and Shaw are happy to run the ones and twos. Ah, scratch that. BANG! Shaw takes the aerial route. It's been delivered deep into the Sachin Tendulkar Stand.

DC 75/0 in 8 overs: Spinners to operate in tandem. Moeen to bowl his first over from the other end. And... DROPPED! A nothing shot from Shaw, this. A lack of communication between Bravo and Santner sees the latter dive, running in from long-off, and make a mess of it all. DC needs 114 off 72 now.

DC 70/0 in 7 overs: Spin introduced. Hasn't had much of an impact earlier today. Let's see what Jadeja has to offer. Starts off with a loosener. 110111 reads the over timeline.

DC 65/0 in 6 overs: Exquisite! Shaw shuffles across and opens the face of his bat to pick up another boundary. Chahar can't believe what he's seeing. Neither can we, if I may add. With 65 runs coming from the PowerPlay, DC presently comfortably sits atop. Time for the tactical break.

DC 58/0 in 5 overs: Half-an-opportunity goes abegging for CSK! Thakur bowls one wide of off and Dhawan slices it between short third man and backward point. Just flies past a diving Sam and into the fence. The 50-run stand's here in only the fifth over of the match. THREE consecutive boundaries from Prithvi. Seems like the Vijay Hazare Trophy form is here for good. DC ON A ROLL!

DC 41/0 in 4 overs: Angled onto the legs and flicked away! Dhawan flicks this past Bravo at backward short leg. It gets better... The next ball has been hit straight into the empty stands at long-on. The last ball of the over is a boundary as well; Shaw gets into the act this time.

DC 24/0 in 3 overs: Stand and deliver! Prithvi clears the fence. Picks the length early and hammers it long and hard to bring up the first six of the DC innings. He has forced Dhoni to bring about a few field changes. Bravo moves to long-on.

DC 16/0 in 2 overs: Sam to share the new ball. Dhawan punches a straighter ball down the ground and there was no stopping that once it came off the middle of the bat. Four, signals the umpire.

DC 9/0 in 1 over: Chahar has the wood on Shaw if we go by statistics. But tonight, the right-handed batsman from Mumbai has started his innings on a confident note with a boundary. Dhawan picks up a four two balls later as well.

DC openers Dhawan and Shaw make their way onto the middle. Deepak Chahar has the new ball in hand.

Suresh Raina: Good feeling to come back and score runs for CSK. We had a good start. I was just trying to be positive out there. God has been really kind. Been preparing really well. Training is a lot about your mindset and it's about how you execute it. Sam Curran and Jadeja finished it well. It's going to be very, very hard to chase down. You need to keep hanging there at the start. They had Mishy and other bowlers who are really good, so you need to rotate the strike. Moeen bhai took off really well and he helped me out there too. We have good swing bowlers in Shardul and Deepak and Sam. So we should be able to do it.

CSK INNINGS

CSK 188/7 in 20 overs: One bounce and into the fence... Sam hits Woakes' first ball for a boundary. The 50-run stand is up off 26 balls as Jadeja picks up a couple of runs. Woakes, however, has the last laugh as he castles Sam off the last ball of the innings.

CSK 178/6 in 19 overs: Jadeja welcomes Tom into his last over with a boundary. Charges down the track and pulls to midwicket. Sam hits the tournament's 19th six off a freebie full toss next. Six again! A half-tracker, that, and it was all but asking for the treatment. Four! Fuller, on this occasion, but Sam has been impeccable tonight.

CSK 155/6 in 18 overs: DC's second-string pacers haven't failed to impress tonight although the spinners have leaked quite some runs. Avesh finishes his spell with figures of 4-0-23-2.

CSK 150/6 in 17 overs: Curran vs Curran commences with a harmless single. However, Sam gets the better of his brother off the second ball he faces to pick up a boundary. It has been a decent performance from Tom, though, thus far, conceding runs at an economy of 5.70.

CSK 143/6 in 16 overs: Unfortunate! Jadeja tucks one towards deep backward square leg and picks up a deft single. Calls for a second and bumps into bowler Avesh. By this time, Raina is already more than halfway down the crease and Pant doesn't mind whipping the bails off. Dhoni comes to crease and... GOES IN NO TIME FOR A DUCK! The pacer hits the hard length and the CSK skipper chops it right onto the stumps. Big, big wicket this for DC! Sam Curran gets things going with a boundary.

CSK 136/4 in 15 overs: First two balls, two boundaries... Jadeja, enticed by the track, was clearly itching to get to the middle.

CSK 124/4 in 14 overs: Sloppy work from Avesh in the deep sees Rayudu pick up four more. Tom Curran isn't a happy man! Oh well... Dhawan makes it 3/3 with a thigh-five. Rayudu, deceived by the slower delivery, goes through with his shot way too early and Gabbar had all the time in the world to settle comfortably underneath. Jadeja to bat ahead of Dhoni.

CSK 117/3 in 13 overs: The 50-run partnership is up off only 24 deliveries! Stoinis bowls an audacious beamer and Rayudu swivels to score a massive six. It's a no ball as well. My, oh, my... That is followed by four leg-byes. The rain is making life further difficult for the Capitals. Raina gets to his half-century too, in the meantime, with a glorious maximum off only 32 balls.

CSK 98/3 in 12 overs: Raina turning back the clock right there! Mishra employs the wrong 'un and Raina connects - AGAIN. That was the 197th six for Chinna Thala . Make it 198. Safe to say, this is precisely what Chennai was missing last season in the UAE.

It's raining boundaries at the Wankhede. Oops, it's actually drizzling now in Mumbai... Hope it doesn't affect the proceedings in any manner.

CSK 81/3 in 11 overs: You don't need 3D glasses to watch that sail into the stands! 4 sixes off Ashwin's last 7 balls. How many times have we seen that happening?

CSK 71/3 in 10 overs: Rayudu is off the mark with a single straightaway. Mishra, though, is mixing it up well to frustrate the CSK batters.

CSK 66/3 in 9 overs: Ashwin heaves a sigh of relief! Taken on an unpleasant ride into outer space off the first two deliveries off Moeen, he finally gets his prized scalp. Moeen goes for the cheeky reverse sweep this time and Dhawan takes another excellent catch while running towards backward square leg. Time for a strategic timeout in the middle of the ninth over. Rayudu joins Raina. Oh well, Raina hits a maximum again. 18 off that over.

CSK 48/2 in 8 overs: IPL's most successful spinner Mishra is into the attack. Starts off with a barrage of googlies to flummox Moeen.

CSK 43/2 in 7 overs: Moeen puts on his dancing shoes now. Goes over long on as Ashwin continues to be targeted. Oh, and it gets worse! The Englishman picks up another boundary working a slower delivery past Mishra at short third.

CSK 33/2 in 6 overs: Tom Curran to bowl his first. Raina nudges the first ball and breaks into a run. A direct hit may have spelt trouble for Moeen who just makes it into the crease as Stoinis at short midwicket hastily collects the ball before throwing it to the batter's end. Three runs off this over. We come to the end of the PowerPlay - has been a good one for DC.

CSK 30/2 in 5 overs: Raina is well and truly back. And he is taking on Delhi's impact spinner Ashwin! Greets him with two back-to-back boundaries.

CSK 20/2 in 4 overs: Moeen stands tall to punch a shorter delivery from Avesh through sweeper cover for a boundary. He is, however, hungry for more! The pacer bangs it harder on the deck this time and the England all-rounder has pulled this through deep backward square leg.

CSK 11/2 in 3 overs: Woakes strikes now! This is bad news for Chennai way too early in the innings. Gaikwad plays at a delivery shaping away from him and gets the dreaded edge that carries to a diving Dhawan at slip. Robin Uthappa #MajorMissing? Raina opens his account with a four.

CSK 7/1 in 2 overs: Not the best of starts for Avesh Khan, whose first delivery strays down the legside. This is a golden opportunity for the young man, who has sealed a spot owing to the absence of the South African pace duo of Rabada and Nortje. He would be eager to add to his tally of five wickets in the IPL. He comes back well to send the second ball nipping dangerously back into Gaikwad, cramping the Maharashtra batsman for space. AND GONE! Du Plessis has been trapped plumb in front as Delhi gets an early breakthrough. Moeen comes to the crease. No Raina for now.

Aveshjpeg

CSK 5/0 in 1 over: Woakes is making the ball talk straightaway - there is a hint of movement into the right-hander. But that does little to deter Gaikwad who is off the mark in style with a boundary. Leans into the drive and before long the ball crashes into the fence. Du Plessis is yet to register his first run.

Out come the umpires. Gaikwad and du Plessis are Chennai's designated openers. Woakes to bowl. Let's play!

PLAYING XI

Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (w/c), Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar

Delhi Capitals: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (w/c), Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Woakes, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tom Curran, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan

WHAT THEY SAID

MS Dhoni: We were also looking to bowl. It's slightly difficult to defend on this ground. Dew could be a factor. But it's cloudy today, so it might not be a factor. The combination looks good, some of the overseas players turned up late, some are in quarantine, but we are ready to go. Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran and Dwayne Bravo are our four overseas players.

Rishabh Pant : The wicket is slightly soft underneath. It's going to be a mix of experience and youth. Good to have the first outing with Mahi  bhaiStoinis, Hetmyer, Woakes, and Tom Curran   are our overseas players. We are not playing in Delhi, the wicket is good here... so we are fine.

TOSS UPDATE

PITCH REPORT

"176 is the average total score in Wankhede. The boundaries are short - just shy of 70 metres square and about the same straight. There is a really nice grass coverage. The batsmen are going to make merry. However, if they get cocky, they might get caught in the deep. A test for the bowlers," reckons Michael Slater.

MATCH PREVIEW

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the only wicketkeeper to lead a side. In 2021, he has the company of three more Indians — Sanju Samson, K. L. Rahul and Rishabh Pant.

When Chennai Super Kings starts its campaign against Delhi Capitals today, the limelight will be on new captain Pant.

Pant’s brutal onslaught across formats over the last six months has brought India success. He will be hoping to repeat his heroics while leading the Delhi Capitals in Shreyas Iyer’s absence.

Dhoni, meanwhile, has an uphill task to revive CSK’s fortune. Had it not been for a hat-trick of wins at the end, powered by a hat-trick of 'Man-of-the-Match' efforts by promising youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad, it would have finished the tournament at the bottom of the table in 2020.

Suresh Raina, whose absence hurt the team in the UAE, has returned while Robin Uthappa’s addition has bolstered its dodgy batting department.

Even after the departure of Shane Watson and Harbhajan Singh, the yellow army has many old guards. It will be interesting to see if Gaikwad and Sam Curran are ready to carry forward the legacy.

The Super Kings will start afresh on a positive note. On the other hand, the Capitals will not be able to field its best XI in the opening game. The Proteas pace combo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje will be unavailable as they are serving the mandatory quarantine period.

All-rounder Axar Patel, recovering from COVID-19, will be missing too. The only solace is the return of Amit Mishra to partner the veteran Ravichandran Ashwin in the spin department.
