M.S. Dhoni barely runs himself out. All the more reason to believe that he had made his ground, but the inch here and there forced third umpire Nigel Llong to declare him out for being on the line.

Chasing 150 and the fourth IPL title against Mumbai Indians in the IPL final in Hyderabad on Sunday, Dhoni walked into bat with CSK needing 77 off 57 balls.

He didn’t score off the first six balls — three off Jasprit Bumrah and three of leg-spinner Rahul Chahar.

The run out was a result of poor judgement. It was Shane Watson who got his glove in an attempted pull, it reached Lasith Malinga who attacked the stumps at the bowler’s end with no cover. The overthrow had only gone till the mid-off region but Dhoni took a chance against fielder Ishan Kishan, who hit the bulls eye.

Llong took a while to reach a decision. One angle showed Dhoni was on the line, but the other angles captured the bottom of the bat slightly inside the crease.
