Awards

Shikhar Dhawan, Player of the Match:  The process, I always talk about it, I focus on it. About my fitness, my approach - I keep working on those skills. Results will take care of itself. The wicket was stopping a bit, I tried to go for the big shots, but I couldn't connect. But I kept my calm. Once I get set, I can get those boundaries, that's what I bank on. While batting first it's about putting pressure on the bowers and getting boundaries. We don't have to lose to many wickets, that was our conscious effort. I have become a senior in the team (laughs), I give a lot of input to the players and my players. The youngsters think a lot, so I try to communicate with them.

Captains Speak

Kagiso Rabada:  In the powerplay we were behind the rate. Must tell you, Shikhar and Mayank, the way they held their never and then Shikhar and Bhanuka the way they set it up was unbelievable. Livingstone the way he played some gentle strokes out of the park, that set us up nicely and we got a winning total. Each and every individual in our bowling line up put our hand up. Arsh (Arshdeep) has been the best death bowler in the comp, that's what the stats say. He has got a lot of talent, drive and ambition. And he is just a good bloke. So nice to have him around. I know I am going to bowl at the death. Arsh has been magnificent. He has been leading the way in that discipline. Everyone else knows their roles. Rahul is a key spinner for us. Sandeep has experience and got us a key wicket in the powerplay. Rishi put his hand up in the final over. I don't think I have left out anyone (smiles). I think we bowled really well. Still a bit nerve wracking when you are bowling at MS Dhoni and there is not one red shirt in the crowd, only yellow shirts chanting his name. He held his nerve, credit to him.

Punjab edges out Chennai by a slender margin and a lot of credit must be showered on young Arshdeep Singh who continues to be a revelation in the death overs.

CSK 176/6 in 20 overs: SIX! Magnificent MS!
Short and tailing in and Dhoni swivels nonchalantly to smack the ball into the stands. Slower bouncer and Dhoni lets it go. WIDE signalled by umpire Erasmus and CSK needs 20 off 5 balls.  Superb yorker and Dhoni fails to put it way. CSK needs 20 off 4. Up in the air and Dhoni gets a toe-edge down to deep mid-wicket. The ball was sliding down leg and Dhoni opted to swipe at it but mistimed it straight to Bairstow who made no mistake. No fairytale finish from the miracle worker tonight. Pretorius, the new man gets a single. SIX. Jadeja slams the full-toss straight back over the bowler for a maximum. A single to finish and Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs.

MS Dhoni c Bairstow b R Dhawan 12 (8b 1x4 1x6)

CSK need 27 runs in 6 balls. Rishi Dhawan to bowl.

CSK 161/5 in 19 overs: Arshdeep drills in the fuller length and Jadeja pushes it down to deep mid-wicket for a single.  Full and Dhoni tonks it straight to Mayank at cover. Dot. 34 needed off 10.  Full outside-off and Dhoni nearly slaps it straight to Rayudu at backward point. Rabada says he has missed the ball for a moment in the lights. The chase gets stiffer for CSK by the minute. Inch-perfect delivery in the blockhole and Jadeja only gets a single. 32 needed off 8 balls.  Low full-toss and Dhoni pummels it down past long-off for FOUR. He's put a lot of weight behind that swipe and CSK would want another boundary to finish the over. Dhoni goes downtown but fails to beat the long-on fielder this time. He retains strike for the final over.

CSK need 35 runs in 12 balls

CSK 153/5 in 18 overs: Rayudu fires in a low full-toss and Rayudu hits it down to long-off from the bottom of the bat. He is absolutely worn down after taking the single. FOUR. Full from Rabada and Jadeja sweeps him through mid-wicket for a crucial boundary. Jadeja drills one to mid-wicket for a single. DOT. Rayudu fails to get bat on a slower bumper from Rabada. BOWLED him! The fatigue gets the better of Rayudu as Rabada's cross-seamer pumps into his toe and deflects to the stumps.  A stupendous lone-waged battle ends as MS Dhoni walks out to the middle.  Rabada welcomes Dhoni with a fiery bouncer and finishes the over with a crucial dot ball.

Jadeja sneaks in a quick single with a push to cover and swiftly finds the second run off the overthrow.  Review for an lbw as Chahar hits flush on Jadeja's front-foot as his attempted sweep goes wrong. The ball seemed to slide down the leg-stump. Not out as the ball is shown to have pitched outside leg.

Shivam Dube b R Dhawan 8 (7b 1x4

CSK 32/2 in 6 overs: Arshdeep squares up Santner with a beauty and the vacant slip-cordon denies him a wicket. The ball slides in and shapes away as Santner attempts for a flick across the line. He's instantly signalled his skipper to bring in first-slip. Bowled him! This time the ball slides the other way as Santner moves across to have his leg-stump shattered. Absolutely flummoxed by Arshdeep's line there. Dube in at 4. Arshdeep continues to find movement through the air.

Despite possessing a stacked batting order of hefty power-hitters, Punjab's ultra-aggressive approach has perhaps proved to be its own downfall sometimes this year. Mayank's men thus find themselves in similar waters as that of Chennai who is still breathing to battle with an out-of-form top-order and a wobbly bowling line-up.

4:50PM IST: MS Dhoni has brought all of his vintage vibes back to the fore in streaks and flashes this season. Here's a classic from the first meeting between the sides this season where Dhoni's acrobatic fielding inflicted a memorable run-out:

4:35PM IST: Chennai and Punjab face off for the second time this season. Here's a recap on how the last meeting unravelled with PBKS earning a breezy win:

PREVIEW

For CSK, the Tiger has awoken.  M. S. Dhoni,  at 40, remains the side’s biggest match-winner and one of the game’s great finishers. His incredible blitzkrieg against Mumbai Indians has provided CSK with belief and inspiration. Having tasted blood, Dhoni will be on the prowl against  Punjab Kings  in Monday night’s clash at the batter friendly Wankhede Stadium.

The match is crucial for two teams seeking to find momentum. Punjab Kings has three wins from seven matches and CSK, two.

ALSO READ -  Dhoni continues to be the nerveless finisher

CSK requires greater consistency from its batters. Crucially, skipper Ravindra Jadeja needs to fire. And big-hitter Shivam Dube’s shot selection has to be judicious.

Will CSK field Matheesha Pathirana, the slinger from Sri Lanka, in this duel? He can be slippery. Seamer Mukesh Chowdhary has bowled with greater control, all-rounder Dewaine Pretorious has chipped in, Dwayne Bravo’s variations have been brilliant and Mahesh Theeshana has contained and struck with his brand of spin.

Livingstone the biggest threat

For Punjab Kings, coached by the legendary Anil Kumble, Liam Livingstone, with his barrage of shots, represents the biggest threat. Skipper Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan can construct monuments while Shahrukh Khan can dismiss attacks.

The fast and skilful Kagiso Rabada and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar can strike telling blows. Swinger Vaibhav Arora and crafty left-armer Arshdeep Singh are handy pacemen.

The match can go down to the wire.
