A quick single off the next brings Kohli on strike. du Plessis miscues and it has settled safely in Hardik's palms - it is the Gujarat skipper's 100th catch in IPL. Maxwell comes to crease. RCB 26/0 in 3 overs: Vintage Kohli! A pick-up shot down the ground off Shami, who wears a wry smile. 5 wides... Shami strays down leg and it has trickled down to the fence. Four more! Kohli goes over covers. Unlucky... du Plessis rides his luck as an inside edge rolls down to the rope.

RCB 8/0 in 2 overs: Hardik receives some medical attention; the physio tapes his hand. Bowls a tight over nonetheless, conceding only three singles.

RCB 5/0 in 1 over: A slip in place for Kohli. There's a bit of sound as du Plessis looks to flick one down leg. Four runs!

Kohli and du Plessis to open for Bangalore. Shami to bowl. Wade replaces Saha as 'keeper.

GT 86/3 in 12 overs: Pandya scythes a back-of-a-length delivery from Kaul past the diving fielder at point.

GT 78/3 in 11 overs: A hint of turn from Hasaranga and a faint edge from Pandya trickles down to the fence.

GT 72/3 in 10 overs: Maxwell returns. Dropped! Prabhudessai spills a sitter. Worse, he has palmed it over the rope. Hardik's lost his bat... it has travelled quite the distance towards square leg.

GT 64/3 in 9 overs: Saha's been found well short of the crease. Hardik nudges one towards extra cover. Saha is late to respond to his skipper's call for a single as du Plessis rattles the sticks with a direct hit at the 'keeper's end. Strategic timeout. Miller walks in.

GT 38/1 in 5 overs: Hazlewood continues. Wade clubs the first ball for four. He follows it up with a six off the third ball. Hazlewood taking a beating from his countryman. Wade gets four more thanks to Hasaranga's misfield at point. 15 from the over.

GT 23/1 in 4 overs: Maxwell to bowl his first. Great start from the off-spinner. Just two off the over.

GT 21/1 in 3 overs: Hazlewood to bowl the third. There is a bit of yes and no between the batters before Kohli has a shy at the stumps after running in from backward point. Gill's safe. Gill pokes at a delivery outside the off-stump as Maxwell takes a blinder at slip. Wade comes to the crease.

GT 20/0 in 2 overs: Gill gets off the mark with a single. Saha sweeps Shahbaz's third delivery in front of square for four more. There is an appeal for LBW for Gill's wicket off the last delivery but the umpire isn't interested. Faf isn't convinced enough to go upstairs.

GT 14/0 in 1 over: Tucked away for a boundary. Kaul starts off with a half-volley on Saha's pads and has been punished. Six! Bowled right into the slot once again and Saha has lofted this down the ground with a straight bat. The 'keeper-batter is in the mood tonight. The last ball has been creamed through cover for four.

Saha and Gill open for Gujarat. Kaul to get things rolling with the new ball.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Shahbaz Ahmed, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Siddarth Kaul, Josh Hazlewood

Gujarat Titans:: Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Shubman Gill, Matthew Wade, Hardik Pandya (c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Lockie Ferguson, Yash Dayal, Mohammed Shami

Faf du Plessis: We would have batted too. It looks a bit dry. One change - Siddarth Kaul comes in for Siraj. We have to win today and Delhi needs to lose its game.

Hardik Pandya: We are going to bat. We can practise batting first and putting a good score on the board. Lockie comes in in place of Alzarri. Looks like a similar wicket to the one we played against Chennai, but I expect this to play better as this is an evening game.

Gujarat Titans opts to bat.

"We have had 19 games here. The batters will look to target the corners. You expect the pitch to deteriorate a bit. It will be dry and warm. There is a nice grass covering. This is the hardest surface I have seen here in this season. A must-win game for RCB... I think we are in for a cracker," Graeme Smith reckons.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will need a big win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in its last league stage match on Thursday to keep its IPL playoff hopes alive.

RCB’s poor net run rate (-0.323) makes the task that much harder. RCB’s best chance of making the cut is to put it across GT and hope that Delhi Capitals - level with RCB on 14 points, but cushioned with a superior NRR of +0.255 - loses to Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

Table-topper GT, which enters this fixture on the back of two comfortable victories, will provide a tremendous challenge to RCB. GT, which has already sealed a playoff berth, possesses in-form batters in Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, David Miller and skipper Hardik Pandya. The bowling is led by pacer Mohammed Shami (18 wickets) and spinner Rashid Khan (16 wickets).

All eyes on spinners

A 54-run loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in its previous outing hurt RCB’s chances. Virat Kohli’s poor run continued, while fast bowlers Josh Halewood and Mohammed Siraj leaked runs.

Much will depend on spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and seamer Harshal Patel, the core of the RCB attack. Harshal took four for 34 in the game against PBKS, while Sri Lankan Hasaranga recorded a five-for in the win over Sunrisers Hyderabad a few days earlier.

RCB needs an extraordinary showing on Thursday, and a bit of luck with other results, to stay in the hunt.
