The flamboyant Chris Gayle provided a glimpse of the reasons for his renown earlier this week when he smashed 77 at a strike-rate of 202.63 to help Royal Challengers Bangalore collect a 21-run win over Gujarat Lions. The West Indies batsman was particularly severe on the left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja, who eventually conceded 57 runs off his four overs. He teed off nicely in the eighth over, hitting two fours and two sixes to warm up for the whirlwind knock.
On Sunday, there will be his compatriot awaiting with the ball. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Sunil Narine has generally been frugal with his off-spin. As Gayle’s eyes light up to the sight of spin, he could target Narine to give himself leverage for the typical gale that he specialises in. But Narine is no easy fodder, and could spin a web to ensnare his opponent.
And it is not just with the ball that he may provide competition to the better known West Indies cricketer. Narine has excelled as an opener in this tournament as well; his knocks of 37 and 42 on two occasions provided impetus to his side’s innings. On Sunday, he may even peg Gayle back with the bat in hand.
