Dwayne Smith, the Gujarat Lions batsman, played his first game of the IPL this season. He utilised his opportunity to open the batting and kept himself in the reckoning, scoring 32 off 21 balls to contribute in his team’s attacking start that eventually helped it collect victory in the final over. Excerpts from his post-match interaction with the media:

Q: How did you react when you got the opportunity of opening the innings?

A: It wasn't tough. Because I was accustomed to opening the batting. When I got the opportunity, I just took it when it mattered. I'm someone who feels positive. I use it to the best that I can.

Q: Were you trying to prove anything?

A: My thing is to prove that we can win. I don't have to prove myself to anyone.

Q: What was the team’s reason to beef up the batting?

A: We have to play on how the pitch was playing. With an extra batsman who can go and hammer, I think we missed that in the last game. It's good to see that we've got back to winning ways.

Q: What is the extent of Aaron Finch’s current injury?

A: I think he's alright. But that is up to the medical staff to deal with. Not sure what's going to happen, but I'm sure he's going to be ready.

Q: Any concerns over Finch's back injury?

A: As far as we can see, he's diving around the field and stuff like that. So he's good.

Q: What's happened to Finch?

A: I don't know what happened, but he's looking fine.

Q: Was the 25-run over the turning point? (Kane Richardson gave away 25 runs in the sixth over of the chase)

A: Yes it was. But I think we have a batting line-up to take on any score.

Q: Was there any strategy to counterattack Kohli?

A: No. it was just natural. Myself and Baz (Brendon McCullum) have played for long time. We know each other. We complement each other well.

Q: Was there a plan to play certain bowlers safely and attack certain bowlers?

A: Dwayne doesn't play anyone safely. He looks to attack everyone.
