Nineteen-year-old Rishabh Pant is everyone’s darling after a match-winning 97 against Gujarat Lions. “One of the best innings I have seen in the IPL & that includes all 10 seasons,” tweets Tendulkar. Pant’s coach Rahul Dravid is proud that his pupil, at 97, went for a big hit instead of picking nervous singles, that would’ve raised the required-rate. He even gets a pat on his cheek from the opposition skipper Suresh Raina. It’s an innings that everyone loves. It’s an innings that he’d cherish. But it’s the kind of innings that he would play often. For Pant has promise.
Mumbai Indians, at the top of the table, needn’t be insecure. Against Pant, however, it needs to be careful. But it has with it the a weapon to stop Pant: Jasprit Bumrah -- his accuracy, pace, and variation are quite handy even for the best of the T20 batsmen. Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch, who failed to chase 12 in a Super Over against him, would concur.
