The relatively unknown Hardus Viljoen will make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Kings XI Punjab against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday at the Eden Gardens.
Kings XI skipper Ravichandran Ashwin named Viljoen in the XI in place of England all-rounder Sam Curran.
The South African fast bowler was picked up the the Kings XI for his base price Rs. 75 lakhs in the auctions last year.
The 30-year-old picked up the wicket of England opener Alastair Cook of his maiden ball in Test cricket in 2016. It turned out be his only wicket and Test appearance for the Proteas.
Frustrated with lack of opportunities, Viljoen decided to sign a Kolpak contract with English county side Derbyshire midway through the 2016-17 season. In January 2019, he terminated his contract by mutual consent.
Viljoen has also played in franchise T20 sides Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League and Chittagong Vikings in the Bangladesh Premier League.
