“He told me in the morning (of the Mumbai match) itself. He let me know that he won’t be able to play the match.I knew before I came to the ground in the morning,” said TN coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar on Murali Vijay's injury.

A day after India opener Murali Vijay was dropped from the Tamil Nadu squad for failing to report for the Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Mumbai on Thursday citing shoulder pain, Tamil Nadu coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said the Vijay’s discomfort “didn’t come as a surprise” since he already knew he “had something to do with his shoulder” from the start of the tournaxment.

“I knew it had something to do with the shoulder. I don’t know the technical part,” said Kanitkar on Friday.

When pointed out that Vijay was seen going off the field often while fielding in the tournament, he said, “He needed treatment on and off and it’s something that the team physio will be able to tell you. He needed a bit of maintenance, which a lot of players usually need. It’s a normal thing.”

The team physio, however, refused to comment on the issue.

“He told me in the morning (of the Mumbai match) itself. He let me know that he won’t be able to play the match. I think there was some communication gap with the association. I knew before I came to the ground in the morning,” said the coach.

“I’m not aware of what the procedure is (the protocol to be followed a player to covey that he’s been injured), but I was told. And I knew right from the beginning (that he had a shoulder problem). So, I had already decided who was going to play (in case he missed). It wasn’t a surprise,” he added.

When it was brought up that Vijay had similarly missed a Ranji trophy match once, Kanitkar said, “He had a problem with his neck then. That time, he knew only when he woke up in the morning, but he had come to the ground and got it treated. This time, he didn’t come to the ground.”

Kanitkar also said that he wasn’t consulted before it was decided to drop Vijay. He further added that he doesn’t have any update on Vijay's injury. “I really don’t know. Since yesterday, I don’t know,” he said.
