Virat Kohli was chosen as captain of the Test team of the year selected by Cricket Australia (CA). Kohli, who has led India to nine victories out of 12 this year, leads the side ahead of Australia’s current captain Steve Smith, who has been iffy in terms of garnering results with Australia.

Kohli was earlier left out of the Test team of the year announced by International Cricket Council (ICC). He was not among the highest run-getters in Tests during the period of assessment – September 14, 2015 to September 20, 2016 – but this year has been prolific for him otherwise.

Kohli has scored 1215 runs at an average of 75.93 in India’s Tests this year. He scored three double-centuries this year, all against different opponents.

Quinton de Kock, the South Africa wicket-keeper, was another who enjoyed a successful 2016 but was left out of ICC’s team. De Kock has scored 589 runs in 11 innings at an average of 65.44 in 11 innings.

David Warner, Alastair Cook, Kane Williamson, Adam Voges, and Dale Steyn, who found themselves in ICC’s Test team of 12, were not chosen for Cricket Australia’s XI. Besides Kohli, Pakistan’s Azhar Ali, de Kock, and South African pacer Kagiso Rabada were instead chosen.

India's Ravichandran Ashwin, the ICC Cricketer of the Year and Test Player of the Year, was included in both teams.

Cricket Australia's Test team of the Year:

Azhar Ali, Joe Root, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli (c), Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Quinton de Kock (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Rangana Herath, Mitchell Starc, Kagiso Rabada.
