Thursday’s discussion with the BCCI top brass could well end the suspense over Kumble's interest in continuing as India’s head coach.

A day after the deadline for applying for the post of India coach expired, head coach Anil Kumble is likely to discuss his future course of action with key Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials at Birmingham on Thursday.

Kumble is likely to meet BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and general manager (cricket operations) Dr. M.V. Sridhar, three days before India's ICC Champions Trophy opener against arch-rival Pakistan. While a formal meeting is scheduled for Saturday after chief executive Rahul Johri's arrival in Birmingham, Thursday's discussion could well end the suspense over Kumble's interest in continuing as India’s head coach.

Despite the former India captain having guided India through a golden run, especially in Tests, since taking over as head coach last year, the BCCI invited fresh applications for the head coach's post, hours after India's squad departed for the Champions Trophy, the last assignment of Kumble's year-long contract.

Even though the BCCI has announced that Kumble will be a direct entrant in the selection procedure, to be conducted by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), it will be interesting to see if the man himself is interested in continuing after the kind of aspersions that have been cast about his methods. According to the BCCI officials, Kumble's working style has been described as “overbearing” by captain Virat Kohli.

In the wake of the last week's developments, it may not come as a surprise if Kumble decides not to seek extension. If he actually pulls out, it may cause embarrassment for the establishment since The Hindu understands that no major contender has applied for the post so far.

Ravi Shastri, who preceded Kumble as the Team Director and was interviewed last year, is understood to have been contacted but he has made it clear that he will not apply for the job following his embarassing exit, last year.
